European Envoy Praises Algeria’s Role as a Reliable Energy Partner

Algiers – October 2025 – In a diplomatic and economic exchange, the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received today, Tuesday, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Algiers, the Ambassador of the European Union to Algeria, Diego Mellado, in the presence of the Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bekir Tafer, along with several senior officials of the ministry.
The meeting, according to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, focused on the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations between Algeria and the European Union, within the framework of the strategic dialogue on energy. Discussions centered particularly on the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, which constitute key pillars of cooperation between the two sides.
The talks provided an opportunity to review the progress achieved in the energy partnership, notably in the supply of natural gas to Europe, the development of production fields, and the reinforcement of cooperation in advanced technologies aimed at reducing emissions and minimizing the carbon footprint. The two parties also discussed carbon capture projects, environmental protection initiatives, and the development of hydrogen under the “Southern Hydrogen Corridor” (Corridor Sud H₂), which will link Algeria to Europe through Italy, Germany, and Austria. This project is designed to facilitate the export of hydrogen and to contribute to global energy transition and efficiency efforts.
Minister Arkab emphasized that Algeria encourages European companies to strengthen their presence in the national market by investing in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors. He underlined that the Algerian government has undertaken substantial reforms in its legal and regulatory frameworks, establishing a more flexible, transparent, and investment-friendly environment that fosters international partnerships and supports foreign investors.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed investment prospects in Algeria’s mining sector and the establishment of mutually beneficial partnerships with European enterprises. Special focus was placed on the transfer of knowledge, training, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, particularly in research, exploration, transformation, and the valorization of mining resources such as rare earth elements and strategic minerals. These initiatives align with the new mining law, which provides substantial incentives and promotes the localization of mining industries within Algeria.
For his part, Ambassador Diego Mellado expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing strategic dialogue between Algeria and the European Union in the field of energy. He commended the level of cooperation achieved and reiterated the EU’s growing interest in the Algerian market, recognizing Algeria as a vital and trustworthy partner in ensuring Europe’s energy security.
Mellado also reaffirmed the EU’s intention to deepen cooperation in the production of green and blue hydrogen, the exploitation of strategic minerals, and their processing to serve key industries, particularly those linked to renewable energy and sustainable development.
