Exclusive Interview With Ambassador Mohammad Reza Babaei: Envoy Discusses Depth of Algeria–Iran Relations and Tehran’s Vision on Regional Challenges
✍️ 𝓑𝔂: 𝓓𝓻. 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓪 𝓢𝓪𝓪𝓭𝓪
Axis One – Historical and Diplomatic Relations
Question 1:
Your Excellency, how do you read the depth of historical relations between Algeria and Tehran, especially given that both countries share a revolutionary legacy and consistent positions on liberation causes?
Ambassador Babaei:
Relations between Iran and Algeria are friendly, deeply rooted, and historical, extending for more than sixty years. With the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979, revolutionary and independent policies—opposing oppression, injustice, colonialism, and domination—became central to the new system. These principles were aligned with the policies of Algeria’s glorious liberation revolution, bringing the views of the two countries closer than ever at bilateral, regional, and international levels.
Over the decades, these fraternal relations have endured and manifested themselves at different moments in history. Their most prominent symbol has been the support both countries have extended to the struggles of the Palestinian people for liberation and independence.
Question 2:
Historically, Algeria also played a central mediation role between Iran and the United States in 1980, helping resolve one of the most complex disputes of the era. How do you recall this legacy in your dealings with Algeria as a trusted partner?
Ambassador Babaei:
Algeria played a prominent, important, and historic role in disputes between Iran and certain countries, most notably its mediation in the crisis related to the seizure of the American espionage den. Given the confidence the Islamic Republic of Iran had in Algeria, the role of the Algerian government in resolving the crisis was welcomed, ultimately resulting in the issuance of the Algiers Declaration.
Although the United States later failed to honor its commitments under that declaration, the valuable role of the Algerian government cannot be denied. We also take this opportunity to recall the late Algerian foreign minister Mohamed Seddik Benyahia, who made great efforts to resolve disputes during that period and beyond. These sincere initiatives demonstrated the trust and close connection between the leaders of both countries, which has always been one of the foundations of their friendly and brotherly relations.
Question 3:
What are the main points of convergence between Algeria and Iran regarding current regional and international issues at the beginning of 2026?
Ambassador Babaei:
The two countries share positions on many regional and international issues, positions that stem from their principles and beliefs. Support for peoples under occupation, opposition to oppression, aggression, and foreign interference in internal affairs, and respect for international laws and regulations are among the shared principles of both nations.
Support for the Palestinian people, confronting expansionist policies of the Zionist entity, promoting peace and stability in the region and the world, and resisting foreign intervention in the affairs of Islamic countries are among the common positions of Algeria and Iran in regional and international forums this year.
Axis Two – Political Cooperation and International Issues
Question 1:
In light of the accelerating developments, how do the two countries coordinate their positions to support Palestinian rights in international forums, and how do you evaluate Algeria’s role in this file?
Ambassador Mohammad Reza Babaei:
International and regional developments have accelerated in recent years, which requires more consultations and coordination between countries. In this regard, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Algeria participate in consultations and exchange of views at high levels on various regional and international issues, where the Palestinian issue has been among their most important agendas.
The issue of supporting Palestine and confronting the crimes and aggressions of the Zionist entity is considered one of the main priorities of the foreign policy of both countries, especially in regional and international arenas.
Certainly, Palestine is not merely an Islamic or Arab issue, but a humanitarian cause that every free person must defend. Given Algeria’s membership in the UN Security Council between 2024–2025 and other international organizations such as the Human Rights Council, consultations were conducted between the two countries through foreign ministers and their representatives at the United Nations and other international institutions, and there was good coordination in this regard. Algeria’s role during its Security Council membership, especially concerning Palestine and the aggression of the Zionist entity against the Islamic Republic of Iran, was prominent and worthy of appreciation.
Question 2:
After years of maximum pressure policies and economic sanctions imposed on Iran, how were these challenges turned into opportunities for self-sufficiency?
Ambassador Babaei:
Arrogant and oppressive policies of the United States against Iran have been implemented in various forms since the victory of the Islamic Revolution. At one stage, attempts were made to overthrow the nascent Islamic Republic through a coup and internal conflict; at another stage, the Baath regime in Iraq was encouraged and supported in the imposed war against Iran; and later, harsh and maximum sanctions were imposed to prevent Iran’s progress and prosperity.
All these actions reflect the aggressive, expansionist, and inhumane approach of the United States, which imposes severe and unjust sanctions on the Iranian people while claiming to support them. The Islamic Republic of Iran, relying on God and on the capabilities of Iranian youth, resisted unjust and illegitimate sanctions and achieved unique achievements in many fields, including science, medicine, technology, engineering, defense, and nuclear technology, which not only meet domestic needs but can also be exported to other countries. We believe opportunities always exist in the face of challenges.
Although sanctions created many economic problems for the Iranian people and complicated their livelihoods, they also provided opportunities for Iranian youth to achieve progress through reliance on self-capabilities and local energies. We are interested in sharing our capabilities with sister and friendly countries, especially Algeria, and benefiting from the capacities of our friends.
Question 3:
Iran always affirms that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. How do you respond to Western doubters on this issue, and what are Iran’s red lines in this file?
Ambassador Babaei:
The nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran has always been peaceful in nature, and this issue has been confirmed repeatedly in many reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Enjoying peaceful nuclear energy is a legitimate right of all countries, including Iran, and Iran does not ask permission from anyone to use this modern energy.
At the same time, some Western governments and the Zionist entity, who possess nuclear arsenals and weapons, have made false accusations against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program in international arenas for political purposes, in an attempt to increase pressure on it.
Under this pretext, the United States and the Zionist entity carried out an illegal and illegitimate military aggression against Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in June 2025, which was met with a strong and legal response from Iran, and the aggressor suffered a heavy defeat. It became clear to global public opinion that the real threat to peace and security in the region and the world is the Zionist entity, which kills children and commits genocides and humanitarian crimes, having killed more than 70,000 Palestinians and attacked six countries in the region in just the past two years.
Question 4:
Algeria is always known for defending peoples’ right to self-determination and the principle of state sovereignty, as seen in its defense of Palestine and the right of the Sahrawi people to independence. What is your comment?
Ambassador Babaei:
Palestine has been the primary cause of Muslims for many decades, and it should be considered the axis of unity of Islamic countries. Algeria and Iran, as two Muslim countries in the region, have always moved in the direction of defending the rights of the Palestinian people. Unfortunately, during the past two years, the crimes of the Zionist entity in Palestine have multiplied, and we are witnessing genocide, forced displacement, and brutal killing.
These crimes and humanitarian genocide that wound the heart of every free person in the world should have been stopped, and practical measures should have been taken by all Islamic countries. Unfortunately, despite continuous follow-up, this has not happened.
Of course, the Zionist entity’s actions in Gaza have drawn condemnation from many countries, and people around the world have become more aware of the criminal nature of this occupying entity, but what will stop the crimes is collective action beyond statements. Despite Algeria’s efforts in the Security Council, the American veto and unlimited support for the Zionist entity caused these efforts to fail and the crimes continued.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has long supported the oppressed Palestinian people and proposed holding a referendum in Palestine at the United Nations so that the indigenous Palestinian people—including Muslims, Christians, and Jews—can determine their destiny themselves. We believe oppression and occupation cannot continue, and the final destiny of the Palestinian nation will be freedom and independence. The same applies to Western Sahara.
Question 5:
Many countries face internal protests and economic difficulties. What is your comment on foreign interventions in such internal matters?
Ambassador Babaei:
Every country has internal problems at different levels, including economic problems, and Iran is no exception. Livelihood difficulties in Iran are caused by internal and external factors, and one of the main reasons is the oppressive sanctions imposed by the United States.
Recent protests in Iran, between December 28, 2025 and January 7, 2026, were economic protests related to currency fluctuations and were peaceful and limited. The main reasons for currency instability and economic problems are harsh American sanctions and psychological warfare aimed at pressuring the Iranian people.
The Iranian government recognizes the right of the people to peaceful protest and dialogue was initiated with protesters, business chambers, and economic actors. Their demands were heard and practical solutions were reached, including modifying some foreign-exchange policies.
At the same time, the US president made threatening statements against Iran and intervened directly and daily in Iran’s internal affairs, encouraging rioters. Destructive and terrorist elements were introduced into protests, turning them into sabotage acts.
According to available information, recent unrest in Iran was planned by the United States and the Zionist entity as a continuation of the 12-day war against the Iranian people, aiming to destabilize the country, which failed despite heavy losses in lives and property. Such acts constitute terrorism, and statements by American and Zionist officials, including Trump, show direct involvement and support.
According to international law and the UN Charter, intervention in the internal affairs of states is condemned and rejected. Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns these acts and will pursue the matter in local and international courts.
We expect different countries to condemn intervention in Iran’s internal affairs according to international standards. Such dangerous conspiracies may be attempted against any independent state, and we must not remain silent when sovereignty is violated.
Axis Three – Economic Cooperation
Question 1:
Despite strong political relations, observers note that economic exchange remains below expectations. What is the embassy’s plan to raise trade volume at the beginning of the new year?
Ambassador Mohammad Reza Babaei:
As before, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran always strives to provide necessary guidance and consultancy to business leaders and economic actors from both sides to understand the capabilities, potentials, and needs of each country in the economic field, fostering cooperation and communication. In the new year, the embassy will focus on expanding relations and communication between private sector economic actors through participation in specialized exhibitions in both countries and facilitating direct engagement between companies and businesspeople.
Participation of economic actors in trade fairs and events organized in both countries has witnessed noticeable annual growth. At the same time, economic actors across various sectors are informed via the embassy about goods and products needed by each side.
Among the embassy’s measures is facilitating visa issuance for Algerian businessmen to travel to Iran as soon as possible to explore this broad market, where goods and products enjoy multiple advantages, including high quality and extremely competitive prices. A single entry into this market is sufficient for Algerian businessmen to launch their activities.
The Iran Business Consultancy Center in Algeria, established about two years ago, is also ready to provide advice and services to both Iranian and Algerian economic actors. Businesspeople from both sides can benefit from the center’s guidance to achieve their goals and start or expand their ventures.
Additionally, over the past two years, most specialized and technical joint committees between the two countries have been held. Preparations are currently underway for the third session of the Supreme Joint Committee, which has been postponed for several years. We hope to see this session convened this year, marking a very important step toward promoting and developing bilateral trade and economic relations.
Axis Four – Global Changes and Emerging Alliances
Question 1:
With the expansion of economic and political alliances such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, how can Algeria and Iran create a strong economic front under the new global order?
Ambassador Babaei:
The world is moving toward multipolarity and confronting unipolarity, a trend that has accelerated in recent years. The formation of organizations like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization confirms this. To pursue its principled policy, the Islamic Republic of Iran cooperates with all regional and international centers and organizations that take steps to counter unipolarity and promote the interests of developing countries. In this regard, Iran became a member of both BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to leverage the capabilities of these significant institutions. Many countries are also members of these organizations, which hold substantial roles and positions internationally.
In general, joining these important regional and international organizations significantly enhances the diplomatic and economic strength of member countries, and Iran and Algeria are no exceptions.
Some scholars and analysts believe that power is shifting from West to East, and that Western powers no longer solely determine major international issues. Strengthening these economic and political organizations enhances the role of developing countries in global developments and reflects the gradual transfer of power from the West to the East in the coming years.
Question 2:
Energy security: As pivotal members of OPEC and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, how do the two countries coordinate to ensure market stability and protect producers’ interests, especially following US President Trump’s statements regarding Venezuelan oil?
Ambassador Babaei:
Energy security is vital for many oil- and gas-producing countries on one hand, and for consumer nations on the other. The Islamic Republic of Iran and Algeria, as important members of OPEC and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, play a crucial role in exporting these strategic resources. Through cooperation within these two organizations, they commit to the fundamental interests of the energy market.
At the same time, unilateral US sanctions against Iran, aiming to remove Iranian oil from global markets and destroy Iranian oil revenues, have harmed international energy security. We have also witnessed similar unilateral actions against Venezuela, including the abduction of its legitimate president.
The primary goal of these aggressive US measures was to seize Venezuelan oil, but they were concealed under fabricated pretexts. Independent countries must not ignore such illegal acts or allow them to become normalized globally.
Independent states must cooperate in exploiting their natural resources, including oil and gas. Beyond technical and engineering collaboration, they must increase coordination at international levels to maximize the benefits provided by these resources, God-given for the development of their countries and peoples.
Axis Five – Tourism Cooperation and the Reality and Prospects of Bilateral Relations
Question 1:
How does the embassy work to bring the two peoples closer, and can you provide examples such as cultural weeks, scholarships, or tourist exchanges?
Ambassador Mohammad Reza Babaei:
To strengthen bilateral relations and increase mutual awareness of each country, joint programs such as cultural weeks have been organized in the past. Currently, we are fully prepared to conduct a wide variety of cultural and artistic programs, including cultural weeks, language courses, short- and medium-term academic exchanges, production and screening of films and TV series, and more.
Both countries boast numerous historical, tourist, and recreational sites that attract visitors from each side. These areas, along with the necessary infrastructure, provide an ideal environment for attracting tourists and developing the vital tourism industry. Additionally, services such as organized tour packages, visa issuance, and transport facilitate travel and support the growth of tourism in both countries.
Regarding Algerian tourists traveling to Iran, thanks to the electronic visa system (evisa.mfa.ir) and the swift processing of applications, particularly given the strong positive view of the Iranian government and people toward Algeria and its citizens, Iranian e-visas and accompanying insurance documents can be issued quickly, allowing easy travel to Iran within a few days.
Inside Iran, a large number of licensed travel agencies, approved by the Ministry of Tourism, Cultural Heritage, and Handicrafts, are prepared to provide comprehensive services from airport to airport, including multilingual translation, tour guides, suitable accommodation, and a range of vehicles requested by travelers.
Question 2:
Algerians are naturally open and curious travelers. Which landmarks and cities do you recommend visiting?
Ambassador Babaei:
Fortunately, Iran possesses vast tourism potential. Wherever one travels in this country, there is a monument or tourist site. Some cities and landmarks are especially popular among visitors, including Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Mashhad, and provinces such as Gilan, Mazandaran, Golestan, Khorasan, Hamedan, and Yazd, in addition to modern and beautiful islands like Kish, Qeshm, and Hormuz.
Question 3:
Iran is also known for medical and wellness tourism. Can you provide an overview of this sector?
Ambassador Babaei:
Iran is among the global leaders in medicine and healthcare, offering high-quality services at reasonable costs. Many reputable medical centers licensed to receive foreign patients, located in Tehran and other regions, provide excellent care under government supervision and with affordable fees. Consequently, Iran has emerged as a leading medical tourism destination in the region, attracting attention from foreign citizens, including those from Arab countries.
Currently, a significant number of Algerians travel to Iran monthly for tourism, medical treatment, or business, and they return with highly positive experiences. Even compared with other countries, the expenses for foreign tourists in Iran, especially for medical tourism, remain highly competitive.
Closing Axis – Personal Touch and Message to the Algerian People
Question 1:
Regarding Algerian cuisine, which dish impressed you the most?
Ambassador Babaei:
Compared with Iranian Ghormeh or kebabs, I was particularly impressed by the variety and taste of Algerian dishes such as Chakhchoukha.
Question 2:
Have you learned any words or phrases from Algerian Darja ‘dialect’ during your stay? Which word did you find amusing?
Ambassador Babaei:
Yes, I have picked up several expressions: “kif kif”, “bzaaf”, “labas”, “wash rak”. Some of them are particularly amusing.
Question 3:
You have visited multiple Algerian cities in your official duties. Which city captivated you with its beauty or hospitality, and what is your most cherished memory?
Ambassador Babaei:
Algeria is vast and filled with remarkable historical sites. Among the cities I visited, Constantine stood out as the most beautiful, with its exceptional charm and the generosity of its people leaving a lasting impression.
Question 4:
Which cultural aspects of Algeria personally affected you as a diplomat and as a human being?
Ambassador Babaei:
The piety, good manners, and kindness of the Algerian people are remarkable, creating a sense of safety and peace. Given our shared cultural and religious bonds, Algeria feels like a second home. In general, Algerians show deep respect toward foreigners, which leaves a profound personal impression.
