Tafadis Sugar Refinery Inaugurated in Boumerdes: A Milestone in Algeria’s Industrial Renaissance

Algiers, Algeria | May 15th, 2025 —  In a landmark event symbolizing Algeria’s determined stride toward industrial self-sufficiency, the Minister of Industry, Sifi Ghrib, presided over the inauguration of the Tafadis Sugar Refinery on Tuesday in Larbatache, Boumerdes. The refinery, which boasts an impressive daily production capacity of 2,000 tons, is now one of the most substantial industrial projects in Algeria’s agro-food sector, aimed at reinforcing domestic production and significantly reducing dependence on sugar imports.

In an exclusive statement to Dzair Tube, Amara Charaf-Eddine, President and CEO of Madar Holding, the group supervising the project, underscored the refinery’s strategic importance.

“With a daily production capacity of 2,000 tons, this project is set to play a pivotal role in strengthening Algeria’s national production capacity,” he affirmed. “It will not only meet domestic needs—both industrial and consumer—but will also open the door to exports in the near future, thereby contributing to the national economy.”

The launch of the Tafadis refinery comes within the framework of Algeria’s ambitious policy to recover and revitalize industrial assets previously frozen or confiscated due to corruption-related investigations. This approach is a direct implementation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to recover embezzled public assets and repurpose them to serve national development.

During the ceremony, Minister of Industry Sifi Ghrieb reiterated that the refinery is a product of this broader national strategy.

“The inauguration of this refinery is a clear message—both domestically and internationally—that Algeria’s new leadership is committed to economic revival grounded in sovereignty, food security, and sustainable development,” he stated.

The Tafadis refinery, he explained, is not an isolated success story, but part of a larger roadmap aimed at reactivating high-potential industrial ventures, with a particular focus on strategic sectors such as agri-food, energy, and materials transformation. The project is expected to not only ensure a stable local sugar supply but also serve as a platform for future exportation to regional and continental markets.

More broadly, the Tafadis refinery exemplifies Algeria’s unwavering commitment to transforming confiscated industrial infrastructure into productive assets that reinforce economic sovereignty and investor confidence. It sends a strong signal to both domestic and foreign stakeholders: Algeria is open for responsible, value-creating investment, and it is serious about decoupling from its past dependencies and inefficiencies.
