ExxonMobil Executive: Algeria a Promising Destination for Shale Gas Development

Algiers – October 2025 – John Ardell, Head of Global Exploration at ExxonMobil, stated that Algeria represents one of the most promising regions for the company in the field of shale gas, citing the country’s enormous resources estimated at 700 trillion cubic feet.
Ardell explained that this vast quantity of gas could meet global market demands, emphasizing that ExxonMobil’s experience in shale oil extraction in the United States has helped accurately identify promising opportunities in Algeria.
He highlighted that the existing pipeline infrastructure between Algeria and Europe is underutilized, presenting a rapid-profit opportunity for shale gas development.
Ardell also noted that using local sand for hydraulic fracturing would reduce costs, alongside implementing water recycling techniques and using low-salinity water to minimize consumption of fresh water.
The company plans to deploy drilling equipment and teams from the Permian Basin to Algeria if appropriate commercial agreements are reached, while training Algerian professionals to take over shale gas projects in the future.
He stressed the crucial role of the Algerian government in ensuring a smooth supply chain, confirming that there are no obstacles to the movement of personnel or equipment, and that all parties are committed to the sector’s success.
Ardell concluded by praising the cooperation of Algerian authorities during his discussions at the “NAPAC 2025” exhibition and conference, affirming a shared determination to advance shale gas exploration and development projects.
