FAF Confirms Petković Continuity as Algeria Sets Sights on 2026 World Cup Ambitions
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers — The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed that national team coach Vladimir Petković will extend his contract, ending months of speculation over his future at the helm of the “Greens.”
FAF President Walid Sadi announced that Petković has given his agreement in principle to continue beyond the 2026 World Cup, with formal signature expected in the coming weeks once administrative procedures are finalised.
According to Sadi, negotiations between both parties have reached full consensus on key contractual elements, with only procedural formalities remaining before official confirmation.
The decision reflects a broader strategic vision within the FAF aimed at ensuring stability and continuity in the national team’s technical leadership ahead of major international competitions.
Sadi emphasised that Algeria is preparing “with seriousness and determination” for the 2026 World Cup, expressing ambition to restore the team’s competitive standing on the global stage.
The federation also outlined elements of its preparatory programme, including high-level friendly matches. These include a scheduled fixture against the Netherlands on 3 June, followed by a second friendly match in the United States against a non-qualified American national team.
The FAF leadership reiterated its objective of surpassing past performances and achieving a strong competitive showing, recalling Algeria’s historic 2014 World Cup campaign in Brazil, where the team reached the Round of 16.
With Petković’s continuation, the federation signals institutional confidence in its current sporting project and a commitment to long-term technical stability as Algeria prepares for one of the most significant tournaments in global football.
