Algiers – November 2025 – A high-level delegation from the National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of the Implementation of Railway Investments (ANESRIF), led by its Director-General Azzedine Fridi, has begun a comprehensive inspection of the final adjustments to the colossal western mining railway line linking Béchar, Tindouf and Gâra Djebilet. The visit, announced on Thursday by ANESRIF, represents the closing chapter of a project that will reconfigure Algeria’s logistics and strategic mineral export capacity.
Charged with the role of principal contracting authority, ANESRIF’s experts and senior officials are conducting meticulous field assessments aimed at validating the final works prior to the line’s commissioning. Their on-site scrutiny concentrates on the laying of the last kilometres of track and on the installation, testing and certification of the technical systems required along the railway’s 950-kilometre route — elements that determine both operational safety and the infrastructure’s throughput capacity.
This inspection mission follows explicit directives issued by the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, who recently toured the project corridor across the wilayas of Tindouf, Béni Abbès and Béchar. The minister’s field visits underscored the project’s national significance and the imperative of delivering a faultless implementation as the country prepares to harness its mineral wealth.
Project management has set an assertive deadline. In an earlier press statement, the project director, Abdechafii Benrabi, affirmed that all construction sites associated with the railway will be finalised before 20 December. This target is integral to the planned operational rollout: the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebounne, announced the intention to place the infrastructure into service within one month, a timetable that elevates the project from engineering achievement to immediate economic instrument.
The Béchar–Tindouf–Gâra Djebilet railway is far more than a transport corridor; it is a strategic artery designed to pivot Algeria’s mining sector into a new era of competitiveness. By enabling the efficient transfer of iron ore and other extracted resources from the desert heartlands to western logistics nodes and export gateways, the line is poised to lower costs, accelerate supply chains and catalyse downstream industrialisation — notably in metallurgy and associated value chains.
As the final technical retouches are validated, attention will inevitably shift from construction milestones to operational readiness: signalling integration, rolling stock allocation, maintenance regimes, workforce training and the regulatory framework that will govern freight prioritisation and safety protocols. Success will depend on the seamless translation of infrastructure completion into sustained, secure, and commercially viable rail operations.
