Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — The launch of the first-ever 100% Algerian-made insulin by the “Biocar” group is set to transform the country’s pharmaceutical landscape, as it will soon be available in pharmacies nationwide. This insulin, produced entirely domestically, will be offered in the form of injection pens designed for patients of all age groups. The product represents a major breakthrough in Algeria’s efforts to bolster its pharmaceutical industry and achieve self-sufficiency in critical medical supplies.

A key meeting is scheduled for Friday in Algiers, bringing together Biocar laboratories, healthcare experts, and diabetes specialists from central regions to discuss the rollout of this new insulin. Representatives from the Ministries of Health, Industry, and Pharmaceutical Production will also participate, underscoring the significance of this development. This gathering aims to provide medical professionals with insights into the new product, ensuring a smooth transition to its usage. Similar meetings have already taken place with pharmacists, and parallel sessions will be held in Setif for specialists from the eastern provinces and Oran for those from the west.

According to sources close to the project, the insulin production process is entirely managed within Algeria, marking a significant shift from the previous reliance on importing insulin and locally filling it. This fully domestic manufacturing process aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to strengthen its pharmaceutical industry and reduce dependence on foreign imports, particularly for essential medicines like insulin.

Biocar’s factories in Oued Smar, Algiers, will begin the nationwide distribution of these insulin pens in the coming days. The insulin will be available in two formulas: “Bio Rapid,” which quickly adjusts blood sugar levels for patients requiring immediate action, and “Biomix,” a blend of fast-acting and long-acting insulin designed to stabilize blood sugar levels over time, particularly during the night.

This development is expected to significantly improve diabetes care in Algeria, providing more accessible and reliable treatment options for patients across the country. Moreover, the production of Algerian-made insulin reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring the availability of essential medical products.
