FM Attaf Strengthens Algeria’s Economic Diplomacy with Vietnam, Uruguay in Kuala Lumpur

Algiers, Algeria– Thursday, July 9, 2025 | In a diplomatic move to consolidate Algeria’s international economic outreach, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held two high-level bilateral meetings in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, marking a milestone in Algeria’s expanding foreign partnerships.

The meetings, held on the sidelines of Algeria’s formal accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), focused on reinforcing economic cooperation with two pivotal nations: Vietnam and Uruguay.

During his talks with Vietnam’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bui Thanh Son, Attaf reaffirmed the long-standing bonds of friendship and cooperation between Algeria and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Both sides agreed on the urgent need to finalize negotiations on pending agreements and to elevate the strategic bilateral partnership to new heights. According to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions emphasized deepening collaboration in priority economic sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and industry.

The two ministers also highlighted their shared vision of fostering South-South cooperation and stressed the importance of aligning their bilateral agenda with upcoming diplomatic milestones. This renewed momentum aims to leverage the rich history of Algerian-Vietnamese solidarity—rooted in mutual support during respective liberation struggles—into dynamic economic cooperation fit for the 21st century.

Later the same day, Attaf held productive talks with Mario Lubetkin, Minister of Foreign Relations of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. This bilateral meeting underscored the exceptional political relations between the two countries and their desire to translate this political affinity into stronger economic ties.

The discussions with Uruguay centered on facilitating greater interaction between business communities and encouraging investment flows in areas of mutual interest. The two ministers also exchanged insights on regional dynamics affecting their respective geographies, reflecting Algeria’s growing role as a balanced and consultative voice in international affairs.
