ALGIERS- Where does President Tebboune lead Algeria? Is it towards prosperity or poverty? The path towards progress can be complex, as evidenced by the paradox of rising commodity prices amidst promises of betterment. To understand this puzzle, we must delve into President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s ascent to power in Algeria and his efforts to transform a nation burdened by a legacy of corruption and economic mismanagement.

Inherited Troubles:

When President Tebboune took office, he was confronted with a myriad of challenges spanning the political, economic, and social spectrum. The legacy of corruption had eroded state institutions, leaving the nation’s economy in shambles due to the pursuit of personal interests and the continuous siphoning of public funds. The unconstitutional forces that once held sway exploited the fragility of the former regime, exacerbating Algeria’s woes.

A New Style of Governance:

President Tebboune set a different tone in governance, dismantling barriers between himself and the people. Shedding the trappings of luxury, he became more accessible, earning the affectionate moniker of “Uncle Tebboune” from the youth. His genuine concern for public issues was apparent, signifying a departure from the norm.

Revamping the Media Sector:

The media sector, particularly the electronic press, became a focus for President Tebboune. He undertook regulatory reform to restore order and discipline, fostering an environment conducive to media talent, particularly among the youth.

Navigating Economic Challenges:

As President Tebboune embarked on his economic program, the unforeseen disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world. The resulting global economic turmoil led to an inflation in consumer goods prices. While the pandemic’s persistence hindered the full implementation of his program, he persevered in launching economic projects and social measures that resonated positively, particularly among vulnerable groups and the youth.

A Focus on Social Measures:

One standout initiative was the unemployment allowance of 15,000 DZD, benefitting over two million young Algerians. The decision to progressively increase wages and retirees’ grants aimed to uplift citizens. Yet, questions lingered about the paradox of increasing wages amid a constant rise in prices.

Economic Transformation:

President Tebboune’s economic agenda revolved around decreasing dependence on imports, a strategy aimed at preserving hard currency reserves and combating wasteful expenditures. This temporary measure led to supply shortages and increased demand, contributing to rising prices. However, this phenomenon is expected to abate as local production, especially in agriculture, revives.

Reviving Local Production:

A comparison between past and present economic strategies sheds light on President Tebboune’s goals. In an era of unchecked imports, commodities were abundant and affordable due to foreign companies flooding the market with inexpensive goods. However, this practice drained Algeria’s economy. By curbing imports and encouraging local production, jobs would increase, and prices would decrease. Notably, President Tebboune’s move to limit car imports exemplifies this approach.

Bold Infrastructure and Economic Projects:

Taking inspiration from President Boumediene’s legacy, President Tebboune embarked on ambitious projects that heralded a promising future for Algeria. These included the Tebessa phosphate extraction project, Gara Djebilet iron extraction project in Tindouf, Bejaia’s lead and zinc mine project, and expansive railway projects. The Algerian Qatari German Hospital and various healthcare facilities addressed citizens’ needs. The initiatives extended to green energy and self-sufficiency in agriculture.

A Flourishing Tourism Sector:

In the realm of tourism, Algeria’s Vision 2025 aimed to lure foreign tourists with streamlined visa processes and numerous hospitality projects. Sporting events and neglected projects like the Olympic complex received renewed attention, underscoring President Tebboune’s commitment to revitalizing the sector.

Reclaiming International Standing:

President Tebboune’s international diplomacy was underscored by visits to nations like Russia, China, Turkey, Qatar, Italy, and Portugal. These diplomatic maneuvers reestablished Algeria’s global and regional status, positioning the nation to play pivotal roles on the international stage.

A Complex Path Forward:

Algeria’s journey towards development is not without its challenges. President Tebboune’s efforts are a step towards transformation, but it’s essential to temper expectations with the realization that change takes time. The sacrifices of the November generation, who fought for a better Algeria, are a reminder of the nation’s enduring spirit and aspirations for a brighter future.
