Algiers, Algeria– Sunday, July 13, 2025 |  As the sun casts its golden farewell over the rugged peaks of Assekrem, the sacred silence of the Hoggar Mountains is broken only by the whispers of the wind — and the awe-struck voices of international tourists. These remote marvels of southern Algeria — Assekrem, Afidhal, and Tagmart — are not only geological wonders but are rapidly emerging as a premier destination for global eco-tourists and cultural adventurers.

In a visit organized under the auspices of Algeria’s Ministry of Tourism, a diverse group of foreign travelers, hailing from Europe and West Africa, experienced first-hand the breathtaking beauty and unmatched authenticity of the Algerian Sahara. Speaking exclusively to Dzair Tube, several tourists expressed profound admiration for what they called a “soul-stirring journey” through Algeria’s most emblematic highland deserts.

“For the first time in my life, I visited a place that feels untouched by time,” shared one Serbian tourist, visibly moved by the panoramic views from the Assekrem summit, where the legendary mystic Charles de Foucauld once meditated. “Serbia and Algeria have had strong ties for decades, and thanks to the Ministry of Tourism’s invitation, we finally had the opportunity to witness not only the grandeur of Algeria’s nature and historical heritage, but also the unparalleled warmth of its people.”

The overwhelming sense of discovery was echoed by another traveler, who emphasized the originality and singularity of Algeria’s landscapes: “Very original. Is different from the other countries in Africa. And this is my first time I see so different place in Sahara desert.”

Standing among the reddish cliffs of Tagmart and absorbing the vast desert expanse, another tourist  highlighted the country’s underappreciated potential: “I think is a huge potential for tourism. And for me, this is the first time I see your country, and I’m so really happy to that opportunity to understand your country — in terms of tourism, the area, the authenticity and the cultural heritage.”

The trip encompassed several highlights, including guided hikes through the volcanic spires of Afidhal, camel treks into the silent valleys of Tagmart, and traditional Tuareg tea ceremonies held under star-strewn skies. Visitors were also introduced to the cultural resilience of the Tuareg people, whose songs and stories breathed life into the vast, austere landscape.

Algeria’s Ministry of Tourism, through strategic initiatives such as these, seeks to reposition the country as a high-end destination for cultural and ecological tourism, distancing itself from outdated stereotypes and carving a new narrative of discovery and openness.

Indeed, what these travelers discovered in the sands and stones of southern Algeria was more than scenery — it was a visceral reconnection with humanity’s oldest roots. As one tourist concluded, “I came here looking for beauty, and I found meaning.”
