Algiers – October 2025 – Amid a sea of influencers addicted to promotion, fame, and the relentless storytelling of personal experiences across the digital universe, Fouad Maâla emerges with his groundbreaking project, “Green Algeria”, wielding a sapling and an axe, confronting a reality resistant to change, yet backed by hundreds of thousands of likes, followers, and supporters.
With the motto “Green, God willing”, a symbolic hand gesture sweeping from right to left, and concise, precise instructions on planting trees in neighborhoods, deserts, and barren steppes, Maâla codified his vision, rallying ministries and hundreds of thousands of citizens to revive an environmental culture that had long vanished.
He launched his initiative online with spontaneity, and it was embraced by millions of fans and followers. The project quickly moved from the virtual space to streets and neighborhoods dominated by concrete, asphalt, and steel, embraced by volunteers and benefactors alike.
Yet, volunteers, confronted by the indifference of their surroundings, faced discouragement, skepticism, and accusations of exploiting the project for fame or profit. Maâla, at times frustrated and defensive, emphasized that he had no personal gain in mind; his sole focus was realizing the dream of a “Green Algeria”.
Maâla is acutely aware that his biological lifetime may not suffice to witness barren patches fully transformed into thriving forests with towering trees casting shadows over future generations. Yet, in his mind and soul, time flows differently: he sees saplings rising, halting the advance of sand, liberating cities from their copper hues, washing away dust and chronic yellowing. These visions fuel an indomitable determination to traverse the entire nation to paint his green canvas. The recently launched Million Trees Project marks only the beginning of a journey aimed at going further.
Maâla has inspired entire ministries to join his innovative vision, reversing the traditional dynamic where citizens chase administrations to fulfill their aspirations. In distant neighborhoods, he awakens dormant consciences that had surrendered to monotony, dust, and asphalt, igniting hearts dulled by complacency, laziness, and retreat into private spheres with a “post-me, the flood” mentality.
Through sustained, organized effort, Fouad Maâla has embedded the phrase “Green, God willing” into the vocabulary of Algerians, and from there into the government lexicon long weighed down by prior attempts and failed initiatives.
The influence Maâla has imprinted on the public psyche is authentic, far removed from chasing likes for viewership or amassing wealth through trivial personal stories. Fouad and three peers have shaken the collective consciousness, awakening it from a prolonged clinical stagnation, compelling citizens to confront reality as it is, breaking away from vertical hierarchies, and proposing a horizontal, circular philosophy that surpasses outdated methods.
A native of Batna, Maâla has built significant capital in virtual engagement, trust, and spontaneity, enabling citizens to rally behind his environmental initiative, which continues to grow with unyielding resolve.
