France’s Diplomatic Blunders: A Shameless Descent into Blackmail and Delusion

From failed threats to colonial hangovers, France’s latest “leaks” against Algeria expose a reckless, unprofessional, and desperate foreign policy.

Algiers, Algeria | May 31st, 2025 — In a blatant display of diplomatic immaturity and political desperation, France continues to bungle its already fragile relationship with Algeria through a series of clumsily orchestrated leaks that betray both poor judgment and outdated colonial reflexes. Rather than engaging through proper diplomatic channels or international norms, certain French media outlets are being used as mouthpieces for leaking provocative measures—measures that, if implemented, would mark a new low in Franco-Algerian relations.

The most recent episode comes from L’Express, which reported—without any official confirmation—France’s supposed plan to freeze the assets of Algerian officials in retaliation for Algeria’s refusal to accept its nationals subject to deportation. Not content with mere economic sanctions, the report claims that Paris is also preparing to ban access to properties and real estate belonging to these Algerians.

This latest move is not only disgracefully opportunistic—it reeks of political amateurism. Once again, certain French policymakers appear incapable of conceiving a France that does not use Algeria as a convenient scapegoat or a source of electoral capital. Instead of addressing its own immigration and governance challenges with maturity and fairness, France lashes out through cheap intimidation tactics that are both hollow and hypocritical.

But Algeria will not be bullied. Its government, people, and institutions categorically reject these threats, which inspire not fear—but disdain and mockery. If French officials believe they can intimidate a sovereign state through headline diplomacy, they are deluding themselves. Algeria says: Go ahead. Take action—if you dare.

The masterminds behind these leaks are clearly out of touch with reality. They do not speak to the real Algeria—a nation of resistance, dignity, and sovereignty—but to a fictional Algeria that exists only in the imagination of those clinging to neocolonial arrogance. Terms such as “regime,” “nomenklatura,” and “dignitaries” are used as part of a lazy and outdated vocabulary, devoid of substance, and rooted in colonial condescension.

Let us set the record straight: the real Algeria is not afraid of transparency or justice. In fact, it has repeatedly requested France’s cooperation in judicial matters concerning illicitly acquired assets on French soil. Algeria submitted no fewer than 51 letters rogatory to French courts, seeking accountability and cooperation regarding funds stolen and laundered by former officials—only to be met with deafening silence.

Algeria also sought the extradition of fugitives convicted of corruption, embezzlement, and theft of public funds. France ignored these calls, preferring to harbor criminals and shield financial corruption under the guise of political asylum. In doing so, France has made itself an accomplice, not just to financial crimes, but to the erosion of justice.

So before Paris engages in sanctimonious posturing, it should clean its own stables. If France wants credibility, let it start by honoring international legal cooperation, rather than exploiting the media to float vengeful and discriminatory policies. If it wants to uphold justice, let it act on the outstanding judicial requests from Algeria instead of turning its courts into havens for the corrupt.

For now, France’s credibility is in free fall, and its diplomacy, tainted by emotional outbursts and strategic incompetence, is in desperate need of reform. Algeria, meanwhile, will remain firm, proud, and unbending in the face of provocations that are as futile as they are foolish.
