Algiers, Algeria | France’s attempt to rewrite the narrative surrounding the suspension of the 2013 Algerian-French agreement on visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and service passports has been met with a firm and unambiguous rebuttal from Algiers. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in a notice published in its official gazette on August 19, audaciously attributed to Algeria the responsibility for suspending the accord—alleging that Algiers ceased its application on May 11, 2025.

This claim, however, collapses under the weight of evidence. An authoritative source within the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the French statement as patently false. It recalled that it was, in fact, France that unilaterally imposed restrictions on Algerian diplomatic and service passport holders, beginning as early as February 13, 2025, when the first Algerian diplomat was denied entry into French territory. A second case followed just days later, on February 26, both of which were formally protested by Algeria through official diplomatic channels.

The duplicity could not be clearer. France violated the spirit and the letter of the 2013 accord first, and Algeria’s subsequent actions were nothing more than reciprocal measures grounded in international diplomatic norms. To portray Algeria as the initiator of the suspension is not only intellectually dishonest but politically cynical—a desperate maneuver to mask French bad faith.

As the Algerian Foreign Ministry source stressed, this matter is now definitively closed. Algeria formally denounced the agreement on August 7, 2025, thus exercising its sovereign right to respond proportionately to repeated French breaches. For Algiers, the principle of reciprocity is non-negotiable: respect must be mutual, or cooperation collapses.

France’s disingenuous attempt to shift blame is emblematic of a broader pattern: a lingering colonial reflex to dictate narratives rather than confront facts. Such behavior not only undermines bilateral trust but also exposes the hollowness of French diplomacy when faced with the consequences of its own actions.

Algeria has spoken with clarity and finality: the dossier is closed. France, however, remains trapped in its own contradictions—clinging to falsehoods that only deepen the erosion of its credibility in the eyes of its supposed partners.
