From Local Terroir to Global Markets: Algeria Positions Its Dairy Sector as a Strategic Export Engine at Tizi Ouzou National Cheese Exhibition
By Dr. Hana Saada
TIZI OUZOU, Algeria — The opening of the National Cheese and Dairy Products Exhibition in Tizi Ouzou marks a deliberate and structured step in Algeria’s broader strategy to reposition its agri-food sector within global value chains, transforming local production capacity into a competitive export-oriented industry.
Inaugurated by the Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamel Rezig, the event gathers 159 exhibitors from multiple provinces, reflecting the geographic breadth and productive diversity of Algeria’s dairy sector. Hosted at the Saïd Tazrout indoor sports complex, the exhibition runs until the 15th of the month and is organised under the theme: “From Local Quality to Export Perspectives.”
Beyond its commercial dimension, the exhibition operates as a strategic platform for visibility, bringing together producers, processors, and institutional stakeholders around a shared objective: elevating Algerian dairy products into international markets through enhanced quality standards, certification frameworks, and branding consolidation.
The presence of representatives from eight foreign embassies underscored the growing diplomatic and commercial interest in Algeria’s agro-industrial potential. Their participation signals an incremental shift in perception, as Algerian dairy products increasingly move from domestic consumption circuits toward export-ready production ecosystems aligned with international demand patterns.
The inauguration coincided with a broader national export initiative led by the Ministry of Foreign Trade, involving the simultaneous dispatch of Algerian products to 17 countries. This coordinated operation reflects a policy orientation aimed at diversifying non-hydrocarbon exports and embedding Algerian production within wider global trade routes.
