G20 Summit: Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb Represents President Abdelmadjid Tebboune

Algiers – November 2025 – Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb stood in for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the G20 Leaders’ Summit convened in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November 2025.
The summit’s theme — and its practical orchestration by the South African presidency — sought to reframe the G20 agenda around “solidarity, equality and sustainability,” with particular emphasis on amplifying Africa’s collective voice within the group. Host-country initiatives are being advanced not merely as rhetorical gestures but as an attempt to consolidate a sustained African presence at the table, in recognition of the African Union’s formal membership and the continent’s enduring development challenges.
On the eve of the leaders’ sessions, a preparatory meeting attended by the Algerian prime minister interrogated several of the summit’s most consequential questions for the continent: the mounting sovereign debt burden weighing on African states; the urgent need to unlock and diversify financing for development; and the imperative to manage and exploit natural resources in ways that deliver long-term, sovereign value to African societies. These items — debt sustainability, development finance and resource governance — were not marginal talking points but central pillars of the preparatory agenda.
