Gara Djebilet Enters Its Final Phase: Algeria Confirms Full-Scale Iron Ore Production and Railway Launch in Early 2026

Algiers – November 2025 – In a major stride marking one of the most strategically significant industrial milestones in modern Algeria, the government has officially confirmed that the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in Tindouf will begin in the first quarter of 2026, setting the stage for a historic shift in the country’s economic architecture. The announcement was made during Sunday’s Council of Ministers meeting, presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who reaffirmed the centrality of this megaproject to Algeria’s vision of industrial sovereignty and diversification beyond hydrocarbons.
Simultaneously, the long-awaited Tindouf–Béchar mining railway line, the backbone of this vast logistical and industrial ecosystem, is scheduled to enter into service in January 2026. This dual breakthrough—launching both extraction and transport—signals the completion of years of intensive engineering work, technical coordination, and investments mobilizing national companies and foreign partners across multiple sectors.
At the heart of this new industrial complex is the first primary processing unit, designed to operate with an impressive annual capacity of four million tonnes. Equipped to crush, screen, and dry-separate the ore before storage or transfer to downstream facilities, the unit delivers a recovery rate surpassing 85%, positioning it among the most efficient structures of its kind. With estimated reserves of 3.5 billion tonnes, the Gara Djebilet field stands among the world’s largest, embodying an immense opportunity for long-term industrial expansion.
The project’s architecture includes a second unit dedicated to producing high-grade iron concentrate, developed through a partnership between Feraal, a subsidiary of Sonarem, and the Tosyali steel group. This component is specifically engineered to sharply reduce the ore’s phosphorus content and elevate the purity of the final product, ensuring optimal integration into the steel manufacturing chain—an essential step toward securing national autonomy in steel production.
Financial projections underscore the transformative scale of the operation. Gara Djebilet is expected to generate close to 3.9 billion dollars in revenue from the export of 30 million tonnes of ore, with a net national profit estimated at nearly one billion dollars after deductions and partner shares. Equally significant, Algeria anticipates slashing its annual bill for imported mining raw materials by two billion dollars, once domestic needs are fully met by local production.
The completion of the Béchar–Tindouf–Gara Djebilet railway line will provide the logistical backbone needed to sustain such volumes. According to ANESRIF, construction of stations, linkages, and specialized equipment is progressing on schedule—if not ahead of contractual timelines. Ore transport is expected to begin at the very start of 2026, catalyzing the economic revival of Algeria’s Southwest and strengthening the national transport grid.
Beyond industrial and logistical gains, the project promises substantial socioeconomic impact, with around 15,000 jobs anticipated during the exploitation phase—most of them drawn from the local workforce, reinforcing regional development and social stability.
