Algiers – October 2025 – At the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), held on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, delivered a compelling address reaffirming Algeria’s steadfast commitment to the stability of the global gas market and to a balanced, sovereign-driven energy transition.
In his opening remarks, Arkab commended the sustained efforts of the GECF Secretariat in maintaining coordination and dialogue among member states, emphasizing that such collaboration is pivotal for ensuring the resilience and sustainability of the global gas industry. He highlighted the Forum’s vital role in defending the responsible use of natural gas — a resource that, according to him, not only guarantees energy security but also contributes significantly to environmental preservation.
The Algerian minister underscored the need for concerted international efforts to promote market stability, warning that persistent volatility undermines the interests of both producers and consumers. “Stability is a shared responsibility,” he stressed, calling for enhanced investments in infrastructure and long-term energy planning to safeguard the sector from disruptions.
Addressing the ongoing debate on climate change and energy transition, Arkab insisted that global and national policies must integrate climate concerns while fully respecting the sovereignty of each nation in determining its own pathway towards clean energy. He reiterated that natural gas should serve as a cornerstone of this transition, given its relatively low greenhouse gas emissions and its essential role in achieving a just and sustainable energy future.
Arkab further shed light on the crucial role of the Gas Research Institute (GRI) of the GECF, headquartered in Algiers, describing it as a hub of innovation and a driver of technological advancement in the gas sector. He reaffirmed Algeria’s full support for the Institute’s activities, expressing his ambition to see it evolve into “an international model of applied research, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction.”
