General Chanegriha Installs General Ait Ouarabi as Director General of Internal Security

Algiers, Algeria | May 24th, 2025 —  On Saturday, May 24, 2025, General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP) and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence, supervised the official installation of General Ait Ouarabi Abdelkader as Director General of Internal Security. The ceremony was held at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Internal Security, according to a statement released by the Ministry of National Defence (MDN).

The appointment was made on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who also serves as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence. General Ait Ouarabi succeeds General Haddad Abdelkader in this strategic position.

The MDN communiqué highlighted that the ceremony provided an opportunity for General Chanegriha to meet with the leadership of the Directorate. During the session, he issued a set of practical instructions and operational guidelines, placing emphasis on the seriousness and gravity of the tasks assigned to the institution.

“These missions are heavy and require steadfast and loyal efforts in order to be fulfilled in the best possible manner,” the statement noted, underlining the importance of discipline, perseverance, and duty in confronting the responsibilities faced by internal security personnel.

This appointment aligns with the country’s broader commitment to enhancing the performance and effectiveness of its security institutions. It also follows the numerous field visits made by General Chanegriha across various military regions, during which he continuously reiterated the imperative of vigilance to confront any potential threat that could endanger Algeria’s territorial integrity or the safety of its citizens.

In a prior address during the April installation ceremony of the interim Commander of the National Gendarmerie, General Chanegriha reaffirmed the unshakable commitment of the ANP to safeguard national sovereignty and protect the nation from all hostile designs.

“We will continue, within the ranks of the ANP,” he declared, “to tirelessly work for the preservation of Algeria’s reputation and the greatness of its people, by strengthening our military capabilities and deterrent means, in order to decisively confront all those who dare to undermine the sovereignty, national security, and economic assets of Algeria.”

This statement came amid heightened calls for institutional readiness in a shifting geopolitical context marked by escalating threats.

The statement from the Ministry of National Defence also referenced the growing insecurity in the Sahel region, now considered the world’s epicenter of terrorism. In January 2025, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the ministerial meeting of the United Nations Security Council on “Counter-Terrorism in Africa” chaired by Algeria, underscored the gravity of the situation: “This region currently accounts for 48% of terrorism-related deaths worldwide, compared to just 1% in 2007.”
