General Saïd Chanegriha Opens High-Level National Forum on the Sahel: A Strategic Response to Geopolitical Tensions and Security Challenges

As Algeria asserts its role as a regional stabilizer, General Chanegriha launches national dialogue on the Sahel’s complex security and development landscape amidst rising foreign rivalries.

Algiers, Algeria | May 25th, 2025 —  At the opening of a national colloquium themed “The African Sahel: Security and Development Challenges in the Context of Regional Geopolitical Rivalries,” Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), delivered a resolute message reaffirming Algeria’s principled stance and multifaceted engagement in the Sahel region.

Speaking before a distinguished audience of policymakers, defense officials, and academics, General Chanegriha emphasized that Algeria “has deployed—and continues to deploy—robust diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring political and security stability across the Sahel.” These efforts, he underlined, are guided by Algeria’s foundational principles: a commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, rejection of the use of force, promotion of dialogue and negotiation, respect for good neighborliness, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

Reiterating Algeria’s long-standing role as a regional anchor of peace, General Chanegriha stated:

“Algeria has always been a builder of peace and stability in the region, working to strengthen the defense capabilities of our Sahelian partners through bilateral military cooperation programs and training initiatives for their armed forces.”

He also pointed to Algeria’s active support in the fight against terrorism, carried out within the framework of the Joint Operational Staff Committee (CEMOC), based in Tamanrasset, which fosters cross-border military coordination while strictly upholding the sovereignty of partner nations.

Beyond the security dimension, General Chanegriha shed light on Algeria’s economic and humanitarian solidarity efforts, emphasizing that “the country’s highest authorities have undertaken social and economic initiatives in the Sahel, including humanitarian aid and financing of strategic, regionally impactful projects.” These efforts, he explained, are part of a holistic approach that seeks to combat the root causes of instability by enabling local populations to live with dignity on their ancestral lands.

He concluded his address with a clear reaffirmation of Algeria’s strategic doctrine under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s leadership:

“Under the insightful and visionary leadership of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune—Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense—Algeria will continue to work tirelessly to foster dialogue and promote constructive regional approaches aimed at consolidating peace and stability in the Sahel.”
