Algeria’s Strong Stance Against Terrorism Highlighted as Key Speakers Address Future Threats and Strategic Approaches

Algiers, Algeria | May 7th, 2025 —  On May 7, 2025, General Saïd Chanegriha, the Army Chief of Staff and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense of Algeria, inaugurated the International Seminar titled “Geopolitics of Terrorism Amid Global Transformations” in Algiers. Held at the National Army Circle in Beni-Messous, this high-level event aimed to shed light on the growing threat of terrorism in the evolving global context, and Algeria’s pivotal role in combating this menace.

The seminar, which runs until May 8, 2025, brings together prominent national and international experts, including Algerian professors, foreign specialists, and key figures from Algeria’s defense and security sectors. The opening session was attended by various government officials, including presidential advisers, members of the Cabinet, the Director General of the National Institute for Global Strategic Studies, as well as senior commanders from Algeria’s military and police forces.

In his opening address, General Chanegriha emphasized Algeria’s early recognition of the dangers posed by terrorism, a threat that the country confronted head-on in the 1990s. He reaffirmed that Algeria was one of the first nations to understand the gravity of terrorism and that it was through the resilience and solidarity of its people with the state institutions, particularly the People’s National Army (ANP), that the country managed to defeat the terrorist threat and protect its sovereignty.

“Algeria was among the first to recognize the barbaric threat of terrorism and extremism, and it is because of the unwavering support of its people for the institutions of the state, that we were able to thwart those sinister plans,” said General Chanegriha. He highlighted the unique position Algeria holds in the global fight against terrorism, having suffered firsthand from its devastations, and now being able to offer a successful model of counterterrorism strategies.

The General also underscored that Algeria’s fight against terrorism had been waged with an unwavering commitment to national laws, despite the political and international hesitations that marked the early years of this global struggle. He added, “Algeria will not tolerate any attempts to belittle or undermine the efforts we have made in the fight against terrorism. We declared war on terror when others hesitated, and today, thanks to our people, our army, and our institutions, we have emerged victorious.”

The seminar’s sessions focused on analyzing the geopolitical landscape of terrorism, defining future threats, and exploring Algeria’s unique multidimensional approach to counterterrorism. The event also included several working groups and discussions where experts proposed new strategies to further enhance global efforts in combating terrorism and extremism. Key recommendations were shared with the aim of strengthening international cooperation and advancing Algeria’s model of prevention and intervention.

General Chanegriha concluded the session by officially opening the seminar, expressing his hope that the discussions and outcomes would significantly contribute to the global fight against terrorism. The seminar is a reflection of Algeria’s continued commitment to playing a central role in global peace and security, with a focus on strengthening cooperation and advancing joint efforts in combating terrorism and extremism.
