ALGIERS – February 16, 2026 – The world turned its gaze to Ghardaïa this February as master weaver Hocine Nedjar secured the Second Prize at the closing ceremony of the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela, India’s largest and most prestigious handicraft fair.

The accolade highlights Mr. Nedjar’s exceptional craftsmanship and the enduring vitality of Algerian artisanal culture. Representing Algeria among fifty other nations from January 31 to February 15, 2026, the delegation presented Zarbias that transcend mere household decor—they are living narratives of identity, history, and collective memory.

The Ghardaïa carpet ‘Zarbia’, or Tishberet Nouziza, is an emblem of Mozabite heritage, distinguished by handwoven wool, natural vegetable dyes, and intricate geometric patterns. Each Zarbia embodies symbolic motifs representing family, bridal trousseau, the five Ksour of the M’zab valley, weaving tools, and regional fauna, including birds, snakes, and spiders, all infused with profound cultural and historical significance.

These Zarbias are living cultural vessels, transmitted across generations from mother to daughter. They encapsulate the daily life, social structures, and aspirations of Mozabite communities, blending artistry with cultural preservation and tourism attraction. Over 15,000 women across Ghardaïa continue to practice this craft, sustaining rural economies while linking heritage to modern identity.

Among the artisans, weaving transforms wool into vivid pictorial masterpieces, with expressive symbols and motifs drawn from the depth of Mozabite society and history. The Zarbia has become a national cultural emblem, celebrated annually, and has gained recognition at local and international festivals as a pinnacle of Algerian craftsmanship.

Color symbolism is central to Ghardaïa Zarbias. Red signifies vitality, black represents strength, yellow reflects the sun and desert dunes, green evokes nature, and white symbolizes purity and communal harmony. These hues, combined with precise geometric patterns, make each Zarbia both a visual and cultural narrative.

The Ghardaïa Zarbia’s significance lies in its dual artistry: technical mastery and symbolic depth. The hand-spun wool, carefully dyed, is woven into patterns narrating personal and communal histories. Household motifs, bridal symbols, and representations of fauna function as a coded language, transmitting centuries of heritage and identity.

Historically, Ghardaïa Zarbias emerge from a rich mosaic of Berber, Arab, Andalusian, and Ottoman influences, reflecting the intersection of Mediterranean and Saharan civilizations. Each design carries layered meanings: geometric motifs for communal identity, domestic symbols, and emblems of fertility, making the Zarbia both an educational tool and a work of aesthetic sophistication.

The international recognition at Surajkund 2026 reinforces Algeria’s global standing in craft heritage, illustrating how traditional arts convey cultural narratives while sustaining local economies and enriching transnational appreciation.

In Ghardaïa, every thread of the Zarbia tells a story of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride—an enduring testament to the ingenuity of Mozabite women and the timeless artistry of the M’zab valley.
