Giorgia Meloni: “Algeria-Italy Relations Are Growing Stronger Than Ever”

ROME – In a reaffirmation of the burgeoning ties between Rome and Algiers, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared on Wednesday that the partnership between Algeria and Italy “continues to grow stronger,” underscoring a new chapter of strategic cooperation founded on shared values, historical solidarity, and forward-looking ambition.

Speaking during a joint press statement with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, held in the Italian capital, Meloni warmly acknowledged the “great competence” of the Algerian head of state, hailing his vision and leadership as pivotal in elevating the bilateral relationship to unprecedented heights.

A Shared Strategic Horizon Under the ‘Enrico Mattei’ Project

The Italian premier placed particular emphasis on the deep-rooted historical and political connection between the two countries, recalling moments of mutual solidarity that have shaped their modern relationship. “Just as Italy stood by Algeria during difficult times, Algeria has always stood by Italy,” Meloni noted, evoking decades of diplomatic and human affinity.

Central to her remarks was the Enrico Mattei project — a symbol of energy cooperation and Mediterranean integration named after the visionary Italian statesman who pioneered post-war energy diplomacy with North Africa. “The Mattei project is bringing our two countries closer than ever,” she said, framing it as the cornerstone of a broader Mediterranean partnership driven by trust, co-development, and long-term sustainability.

Energy Diplomacy: Italy’s Vision of a Euro-Mediterranean Hub

On the energy front, Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s strategic ambition to become a pivotal energy distribution hub for Europe — a role she insists must be built through an “equitable and robust” partnership with Algeria. She cited the reinforced collaboration in gas supply, green transition, and infrastructure connectivity as key dimensions of this strategy.

This vision aligns with Algeria’s growing role as a regional energy powerhouse and key supplier to Europe. With multiple new agreements signed between SONATRACH and ENI, the bilateral energy partnership continues to evolve from a transactional framework into a strategic alliance encompassing hydrocarbons, renewables, and future energy systems.

A Mediterranean Model for Shared Prosperity

Meloni’s statement not only echoed Italy’s strategic priorities but also reflected the shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Mediterranean. Against a backdrop of uncertainty and fragmentation in the region, the Algeria-Italy axis emerges as a model of pragmatic cooperation grounded in mutual respect and long-term planning.

The trust-based relationship between Algiers and Rome — now bolstered by political alignment, economic integration, and cultural synergy — sets the stage for a renewed Mediterranean order where southern and northern shores act as partners, not peripheries.
