Opening the Doors to Public Awareness

The Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC) has announced a series of nationwide open days across Algeria’s wilayas, designed to familiarize the public with its missions and operational capacities. Through exhibitions of specialized equipment, live demonstrations, and awareness campaigns, the DGPC showcases its preparedness to respond to a wide spectrum of emergencies. Representatives from the National Police and the healthcare sector participate actively, ensuring that citizens from all demographics understand the preventive and operational strategies employed to mitigate risk.

A Legacy of Service: 300,000 Interventions Annually

Since its establishment in 1964, Algeria’s Civil Protection has undergone profound institutional evolution, marked by continuous modernization of both human resources and operational assets. Today, the DGPC maintains an extensive network of primary and secondary units, supported by advanced centers strategically distributed nationwide. Its workforce encompasses tens of thousands of personnel across all ranks, including officers, paramedics, divers, canine units, and specialized rescue and debris-clearance teams.

Annually, these units conduct over 300,000 interventions, spanning rescue operations, traffic accidents, urban and forest fires, and other critical incidents. This remarkable operational tempo underscores Algeria’s commitment to civil safety and highlights the institutional maturation that has transformed the DGPC into a modern, technologically capable emergency management force.

Integrating Technology and Strategy in Crisis Management

The DGPC’s modernization agenda has included the acquisition of next-generation fire trucks, fully equipped medical ambulances, and specialized vehicles for high-risk environments. Equipment designed for NRBC (nuclear, radiological, biological, and chemical) emergencies has been integrated, alongside enhanced capabilities to combat forest fires amid increasingly severe climate events. Historic catastrophes, such as the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake, widespread floods, and large-scale forest fires since 2021, have catalyzed improvements in coordination, logistics, and specialized training.

Mobile command centers, geolocation systems, and advanced digital alert management tools exemplify the DGPC’s shift toward an integrated, technology-driven crisis management framework. Internationally, Algeria has established itself as a credible actor in humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Across Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean region, the expertise of Algerian teams deployed in response to earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters has been widely recognized. These missions have strengthened Algeria’s reputation as a reliable partner in regional solidarity mechanisms and civil protection cooperation.
