Global Monitoring Center (USA): Morocco’s Occupation of Western Sahara, the Greatest Threat to Peace and Stability in North Africa
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers, Algeria | At an international symposium organized by the Global Monitoring Center (US) in New York, a broad consensus emerged: Morocco’s continued occupation of Western Sahara, coupled with its expansionist ambitions, constitutes the gravest threat to regional and international peace.
Participants underlined that Morocco’s policies are not merely a bilateral dispute but a destabilizing factor that fuels insecurity across Northwest Africa. They called for the urgent decolonization of Western Sahara, stressing that sustainable stability cannot be achieved while Morocco clings to a policy of repression, demographic engineering, and territorial expansion.
Academic Voices Expose Morocco’s Fragile Claims
Professor Jacob Mundy, a US scholar specializing in peace and conflict studies at Colgate University, dismantled Morocco’s narrative by revisiting the historical and legal record. He recalled the 1975 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which categorically denied any sovereignty claims by Morocco over Western Sahara.
According to Mundy, Morocco’s invasion was driven by a mix of internal legitimacy crises, hegemonic ambitions, and the lure of Western Sahara’s abundant natural resources—revealing a regime addicted to expansionism as a survival strategy.
Legal Experts: Morocco Fears the Ballot Box
International law expert Kathleen Thomas, who previously served as a legal advisor within the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), offered firsthand testimony of Morocco’s obstructionism.
She explained how Rabat manipulated voter identification processes and imported settlers en masse in a blatant attempt to distort the region’s demographic balance. “Morocco fears a referendum,” she stressed, “because it knows the Sahrawi people will overwhelmingly choose independence.”
Thomas dismissed Morocco’s so-called “autonomy plan” as a colonial maneuver, designed to legitimize a military occupation while denying the Sahrawi people their inalienable right to self-determination. She further highlighted the hypocrisy of a regime that represses its own citizens while pretending to grant rights to the people it occupies.
The Polisario: Resistance Will Continue
Speaking on behalf of the Polisario Front at the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Omar reiterated that the Sahrawi people reject Morocco’s proposals, labeling them “hollow” and “legally void.” He affirmed that the struggle for self-determination will persist by all legitimate means, until independence is achieved.
While the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) has established democratic institutions rooted in tolerance, pluralism, and respect for law, Morocco continues to export instability through authoritarianism, militarization, and expansionism.
Experts at the symposium concluded that a free and independent Western Sahara would anchor peace and security in North Africa, while Morocco’s occupation remains a ticking time bomb for regional conflict.
