Government Convenes High-Level Session to Accelerate Local Development, Advance Strategic Satellite Connectivity

At the forefront of the agenda was the annual review of the implementation of the orientations and directives issued by the President of the Republic during the 6th GovernmentโWalis Conference, held on 24 and 25 December 2024. The Government assessed the degree of compliance with the recommendations emanating from that high-level gathering, which had set forth a comprehensive roadmap centered on sustaining the momentum of local development.
The reviewed recommendations emphasize the consolidation of food and water security as pillars of national resilience, the strengthening of local authoritiesโ role in wealth creation and employment generation, and the modernization of proximity-based public services. Particular attention was also devoted to rethinking urban governance frameworks in order to ensure a higher quality living environment for citizens, underscoring a shift toward integrated and citizen-centered urban management.
In a second reading, the Government examined the project for the deployment of satellite communication services operating in non-geostationary orbits (NGSO). This initiative constitutes a strategic leap in the national telecommunications architecture, designed to expand high-speed internet access across the entirety of the national territory, with a pronounced focus on rural and landlocked regions that have historically faced connectivity deficits.
According to the same source, the rollout of these satellite services is intended not merely as a technological upgrade but as a sovereign undertaking. By strengthening broadband penetration and enhancing digital inclusion, the project seeks to reinforce national sovereignty in a domain increasingly recognized as critical to economic competitiveness, administrative efficiency, and strategic autonomy.
