Government Reviews Progress on Strategic National Projects: Focus on Algiers Bay, Port Logistics, and Seawater Desalination

Prime Minister Larbaoui Chairs High-Level Meeting to Assess Structural Reforms and Development Milestones

Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2025 — Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui presided over a government meeting on Wednesday, during which the cabinet assessed the pace of implementation of a series of strategic development initiatives spanning urban planning, digital transformation, port infrastructure, and water security.

A key item on the agenda was the comprehensive evaluation of ongoing projects under the Algiers Bay Development and Redevelopment Plan, a flagship structural initiative aimed at transforming the capital’s coastal area into a modern urban and economic hub. The program aspires to sustainably integrate the city’s maritime façade into its broader economic, touristic, and environmental fabric.

The session also closely examined the implementation of the national roadmap for the modernization of payment systems, adopted in May 2024. The government discussed the latest measures proposed by the Ministry of Finance to accelerate the widespread adoption of electronic payment systems (e-payment), with the ultimate goal of bolstering financial inclusion and enhancing transparency across all economic sectors.

In the realm of port efficiency and trade logistics, an interim report was presented on efforts to reduce the dwell time of ships and improve cargo transit processes at Algerian ports. These efforts are aimed at minimizing costs, boosting competitiveness, and streamlining customs procedures to align with international standards.

In this same context, the meeting reviewed substantial progress in the extension and development of the Port of Djen Djen in Jijel province. The project is poised to elevate the port’s role as a major commercial and logistical hub in the Mediterranean basin, capable of handling growing volumes of international trade and serving as a gateway to sub-Saharan markets.

Water security was also a key point of focus. An update was delivered on the National Seawater Desalination Program, specifically concerning the ongoing works to connect five new desalination plants to the national water grid. These installations are expected to significantly enhance potable water supply in several coastal wilayas, alleviating pressure on natural water resources and strengthening climate resilience.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating these strategic projects, recognizing their critical importance in shaping Algeria’s future economic and social landscape. The meeting concluded with directives for increased inter-sectoral coordination, stringent monitoring mechanisms, and regular performance assessments to ensure timely delivery and optimal impact.
