Algiers – December 2025 – In a diplomatic development underscoring the renewed dynamism in Algerian-Greek relations, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, was received on Wednesday in Athens by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The meeting marked the opening of Attaf’s official visit to Greece, one aimed at breathing new life into bilateral ties and reinforcing coordination on shared regional priorities.
Upon conveying the warm greetings of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to elevating cooperation with Greece to a level commensurate with the depth of historical ties connecting the two Mediterranean nations. Mitsotakis, for his part, highlighted the long-standing friendship binding Algeria and Greece, underlining their shared vision of peace and stability across the broader region.
The Greek premier emphasized Algeria’s role as one of the world’s most reliable suppliers of liquefied natural gas, noting that Greece is increasingly consolidating its position as a strategic entry point for LNG to the Eastern Mediterranean and its northern neighbors. This energy complementarity, he stressed, forms a powerful foundation for the two states to advance toward a stronger and more structured partnership.
Attaf seized the opportunity to reiterate President Tebboune’s determination to relaunch bilateral relations and infuse them with renewed vigor and substance. The minister underscored Algeria’s readiness to work closely with Greece across all sectors of shared interest, placing particular importance on structured dialogue and sustained diplomatic engagement.
Mediterranean Convergence in a Time of Regional Transformation
Turning to the Mediterranean—long regarded as a space of natural cooperation between Algiers and Athens—Attaf stressed President Tebboune’s desire to see both countries more actively engaged in emerging regional dynamics. He underlined the necessity for enhanced coordination on matters related to the European Union’s evolving neighborhood policies, partnership frameworks, and the broader geopolitical transformations affecting the Mediterranean basin.
The meeting also showcased notable alignment between Algeria and Greece within the United Nations Security Council, where both countries currently serve as members. Attaf and Mitsotakis expressed satisfaction at the strong level of coordination already in place, affirming a convergence of positions on numerous regional and international issues.
Describing cooperation between the two diplomatic missions in New York as “exceptional,” Attaf highlighted the spirit of mutual understanding that characterizes the partnership. He emphasized that Algeria values working with Greece precisely because both countries approach global and regional issues through a similar lens—one centered on stability, dialogue, and the primacy of international legality.
