Citing violations of environmental and developmental obligations, Conakry delivers a decisive blow to Emirati investment in West Africa amid sweeping reforms to foreign mining contracts.
Algiers, Algeria | May 9th, 2025 — In a decisive move, the Republic of Guinea has officially withdrawn the mining license of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), delivering a significant setback to Emirati investments in West Africa.
Authorities in Conakry announced that the measure comes within the framework of a national review of foreign investment contracts, with a particular focus on the natural resource sector. The government stated that this initiative aims to ensure that companies operating in Guinea adhere strictly to standards of transparency and sustainable development.
According to Guinean officials, the decision to revoke EGA’s license is based on recorded violations, including the company’s failure to respect the environmental and developmental terms outlined in the original agreement.
The Guinean government emphasized that the withdrawal of the license reflects a new policy direction aimed at restructuring exploitation contracts in a way that safeguards the country’s interests and prevents any unfair exploitation of its natural wealth.
