Hopes Awaited for ICJ Verdict on Zionist Aggression Against Gaza

Hopes Awaited for ICJ Verdict on Zionist Aggression Against Gaza

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is anticipated to deliver its decision on Friday regarding South Africa’s complaint against the Zionist entity for genocide in Gaza. The ruling is awaited with great hope for an order to halt the genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people, ongoing since October 7.

The South African complaint underwent examination in two sessions on January 11 and 12 by the ICJ’s 15 judges, following its submission by Pretoria on December 29. The outcome of this decision, seen as a test for the credibility of the United Nations institution, may likely call for an end to the genocidal aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Experts and informed observers express confidence in this possibility, citing the clear evidence of Zionist crimes and significant support for the complaint from states, organizations, and legal experts. The hope is that the ICJ’s decision will bring justice and an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

During the opening of the hearing on January 11, South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola asserted that the Zionist entity “violated the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide through its aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza.” Lamola emphasized that the Zionist occupation “controls everything in the Palestinian enclave, prevents the possibilities of life, and deprives Palestinians of their fundamental rights,” adding that “everything that happened was neither justified nor lawful nor humane.”

Adela Hashim, the lawyer representing the South African delegation, explained that Zionist aggression in the Gaza Strip had pushed the population “to the brink of famine.” She highlighted that the situation had reached a point where experts anticipated more people would die from hunger and disease due to Zionist aggression, stressing the need to end this genocide.

According to Palestinian Deputy State Secretary at the UN and its specialized organizations, Omar Awadallah, the complaint has a strong chance of success. He emphasized that Pretoria’s claims align with those consistently advocated by Palestinian authorities before the ICJ, including the application of international law, ending crimes against Palestinians, pursuing legal action against Zionist perpetrators, and rejecting apartheid.

After 111 days of Zionist aggression, the nightmare for Gazans continues

As the ICJ decision looms, the Palestinian people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank continue to endure daily attacks and a catastrophic way of life.

On the 111th day of Zionist aggression, Zionist airstrikes persist, indiscriminately targeting Palestinian homes, hospitals, shelters, and essential infrastructure. Dozens of martyrs and wounded were recorded Thursday morning in Khan Younes, southern Gaza, and the Bureij camp in the central part of the Palestinian enclave.

In Khan Younes, where airstrikes and shelling by occupying forces have been ongoing for several days, resulting in hundreds of daily casualties, children and women were detained by Zionist soldiers in deplorable and inhospitable conditions on Thursday.

The previous day, Zionist forces targeted a training center of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Khan Younes, occupied by Palestinian refugees. The attack resulted in at least nine martyrs and 75 wounded, according to UN officials.

In the Bureij camp, Zionist airstrikes relentlessly struck defenseless Palestinians at dawn, causing dozens of martyrs and injuries, mainly among children and women.

Simultaneously, the Zionist entity continues its efforts to devastate Gaza and the occupied West Bank by bombing basic infrastructure, including hospitals, communication facilities, and other public utilities.

On Thursday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned that the two remaining functioning hospitals in Gaza, the Nasser Medical Complex and the European Hospital, are overwhelmed and no longer capable of providing their services. The ICRC emphasized the imminent danger to the lives of tens of thousands of civilians.

In the occupied West Bank, Zionist forces persist in their sadism and cynicism against civilians. According to local sources cited by Palestinian media, in addition to their assaults, Zionist soldiers are engaging in a veritable manhunt. Over 6,200 Palestinians have been arrested and imprisoned since October 7.

According to Palestinian health authorities, the toll from Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank since October 7 has risen to over 25,700 martyrs and 63,740 wounded.
