Budapest, Hungary – September 8, 2023 – Hungary has reiterated its unwavering support for the Algerian initiative aimed at resolving the crisis in Niger and reinstating constitutional order in the West African nation. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto made this affirmation during bilateral discussions with his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf, in Budapest on Friday.

In a joint statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was highlighted that the Hungarian government, under the leadership of Peter Szijjarto, expressed its steadfast commitment to the Algerian-led diplomatic efforts to address the crisis in Niger. These efforts, championed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, have been geared towards fostering dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful solutions to crises in the Sahel region, notably in Niger, Mali, and Libya.

During the discussions, Minister Szijjarto underscored the significance of President Tebboune’s regional approach, emphasizing the need to tackle the complex issue of economic development in the Sahel. This approach, he noted, aligns with Hungary’s own commitment to regional stability and prosperity.

The Hungarian government’s position of support was solidified following a comprehensive briefing by Minister Attaf about the tireless efforts undertaken by Algeria under President Tebboune’s leadership to de-escalate tensions and promote peace in Niger. Algeria’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and negotiations as a means to resolve the ongoing crisis was commended by Minister Szijjarto.

Both Hungary and Algeria affirmed their “convergence of views” during the discussions, addressing the Western Sahara issue as well. The two countries concurred on the necessity of supporting the United Nations’ endeavors through the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, to revitalize the political process. This renewed commitment aims to provide the parties involved in the Western Sahara conflict with an equitable and just solution.

Hungary’ staunch support for the Algerian initiative in Niger signifies its dedication to contributing to the peace and stability of the Sahel region and its resolve to stand by Algeria in its diplomatic endeavors. The collaboration between the two countries underscores the importance of international cooperation in resolving complex regional crises and upholding peace and security in Africa and beyond.
