Hydrocarbons: Sonatrach Achieves 13 New Oil Discoveries Between January and August 2025

Algiers – October 2025 – The national oil and gas company Sonatrach has achieved 13 new oil discoveries between January and August 2025, all accomplished through its own technical and operational capacities, announced Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, on Saturday in Algiers.
This declaration was made during a hearing session before the Finance and Budget Committee of the People’s National Assembly (APN), dedicated to the examination of the 2026 Draft Finance Bill (PLF 2026), chaired by Mohamed Benhachem, President of the Committee.
Minister Arkab explained that these discoveries stem from the intensive exploration efforts undertaken by Sonatrach, notably through the execution of 7,824 km² of two-dimensional (2D) and 7,768 km² of three-dimensional (3D) seismic surveys across various hydrocarbon basins in the country.
He emphasized that these new discoveries, recorded during the first eight months of the current year, will enhance Algeria’s primary hydrocarbon production capacity by ensuring the renewal and expansion of national reserves.
In addition, the Minister highlighted that the company carried out over 466,156 meters of exploration and development drilling between January and August 2025, compared to 405,273 meters during the same period in 2024—an increase of 15%. Sonatrach also drilled 142 wells, compared to 121 wells by the end of August 2024, demonstrating the group’s continued momentum in exploration and production activities.
