IATF 2025: Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritania Pledge to Deepen Triangular Trade Cooperation
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – September 2025 – On the sidelines of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), hosted in Algiers from September 4 to 10, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamel Rezig, convened a high-level consultative meeting with his Tunisian counterpart, Samir Abid, Minister of Trade and Export Development, and Mauritania’s Minister of Trade and Tourism, Zeinebou Ahmednah. The discussions centered on strategies to expand and diversify commercial ties between the three Maghreb neighbors, in alignment with a shared vision of win-win economic cooperation.
Towards a Shared Trade Vision for the Maghreb
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Rezig emphasized that deliberations focused on the “future and prospects of the Algerian, Tunisian, and Mauritanian markets, and the means of strengthening trade relations within a framework of mutual benefit.” He underscored the necessity of joint measures to create a more attractive environment for commercial operators and investors, adding that the complementarities among the three economies offer significant untapped potential.
Rezig also proposed institutionalizing such trilateral meetings on a regular basis to ensure sustained coordination, noting: “Each of our countries possesses distinct advantages that can serve as assets for the others, thereby fostering a regional commercial ecosystem built on complementarity.” He further highlighted the strong participation of Tunisia and Mauritania in the IATF as “a clear reflection of the sincerity, fraternity, and depth of the bonds uniting our three presidents, governments, and peoples.”
Fraternal Ties and Long-Term Commitments
For his part, Tunisia’s Trade Minister, Samir Abid, reaffirmed the “strong fraternal ties uniting Tunisia with Algeria and Mauritania,” stressing that the three nations are “deeply committed to expanding cooperation in trade in order to secure positive results in the medium and long term.”
Mauritania’s Trade and Tourism Minister, Zeinebou Ahmednah, praised Algeria’s exceptional organization of this landmark event, while underlining her country’s active participation through the promotion of locally produced goods such as fish and metals. She described Mauritania’s presence at the fair as a “testament to its strategic priority of advancing intra-African trade” and noted that President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani’s attendance at the opening ceremony “mirrors Mauritania’s vision for Africa’s future and its peoples.”
A Triangular Pillar for African Economic Integration
The trilateral dialogue in Algiers thus goes beyond bilateral interests to lay the groundwork for a more integrated Maghreb economic bloc within the broader African framework. By aligning their policies and pooling their comparative advantages, Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritania aim to become pivotal actors in reshaping regional trade flows and advancing the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
As the IATF 2025 gathers more than 2,000 companies and over 35,000 professional visitors, the symbolism of this Maghreb trilateral engagement signals a new chapter in regional cooperation. It underscores that African integration begins with strong, practical, and trust-based partnerships at the neighborhood level—an approach Algeria continues to champion with vigor.
