In Saint Petersburg, Algerian MP Zouhir Nasri Highlights Algeria’s Energy Transition Strategy and Green Economy Vision

Representing Parliament Speaker Brahim Boughali at the 11th Nevsky Ecological Congress, Vice President of the People’s National Assembly Zouhir Nasri outlines Algeria’s efforts to lead in clean energy and climate justice amid global environmental challenges.

 

Algiers, Algeria | May 24th, 2025 — Representing Mr. Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Mr. Zouhir Nasri, Vice President of the Assembly, took center stage at the opening day of the 11th Nevsky Ecological Congress held in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg. Participating in a dedicated session titled “Low-Carbon Solutions for Green Economy Development,” Mr. Nasri delivered a powerful address detailing Algeria’s ambitious roadmap for energy transition and environmental sustainability.

 

In his intervention, Nasri underscored the top national priority given to energy transition by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who views it as a foundational pillar of Algeria’s long-term energy security strategy. Highlighting the nation’s strategic vision, he emphasized the government’s commitment to developing green hydrogen and solar energy infrastructure—leveraging Algeria’s vast natural and financial resources.

“President Tebboune has made energy transition a national imperative,” Nasri stated. “Through a well-calibrated strategy, Algeria is determined to become a leader in renewable energies, particularly solar and hydrogen, and to utilize our immense untapped capacities for a sustainable future.”

He further elaborated that Algeria is steadily establishing itself as a pioneering force in clean energy across the African continent, particularly through major investments in renewable energy and green hydrogen production.

In this regard, Nasri referred to the comprehensive national roadmap for clean hydrogen development approved in December 2022. This forward-looking plan envisages investments between $20 and $25 billion in partnership with international stakeholders, with the goal of producing 40 terawatt-hours per year by 2040 for both domestic consumption and export.

In a call for international climate justice, Nasri concluded his address by stressing the shared global responsibility in ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition. “Developing countries—especially those in Africa—face significantly more obstacles in this process,” he remarked. “It is vital that we strengthen collective action, transfer technologies, and build local capacities to bridge the North-South divide and preserve a livable planet for future generations. No country should be left behind.”
