Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri: A Distinguished Voice in Religious Media and Cultural Diplomacy

Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri is a renowned academic specializing in religious media, Islamic philosophy, and interfaith (Islamic-Christian) dialogue. As a prolific author and eminent literary figure, he has penned over thirty works encompassing literature, translation, creative writing, and narrative arts—several of which have been translated into major foreign languages, including English and French.

With a distinguished media career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Zaeiri has established an enduring reputation in the journalistic world. He has founded numerous periodicals and magazines and served as editor-in-chief of several prominent newspapers, most notably Hamshahri (¹), the largest Persian-language daily in the world.

His influence extends well beyond journalism. A committed cultural figure, Dr. Zaeiri has made significant contributions to the fields of film and television production. He is also a leading figure in the publishing sector, having established an independent media house that has continuously issued a monthly magazine for the past 23 years.

His most recent intellectual endeavor, “In Search of the Jeem” (2), marks a new milestone in his ongoing creative exploration. This reflective series, published regularly in Al-Ayam News (Arabic) and jeune-independant.net (French), chronicles his current tenure as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in Algeria. In these writings, Dr. Zaeiri  (3) offers a deeply personal and poetic meditation on identity, belonging, and the enduring cultural bonds that unite Iran and Algeria.

Iranians Fear the Door!

I frequently read books, and among the vast array of topics, I have always had a particular preference for travel literature. These works captivate me not only because they provide the pleasure of encountering “the other” through the author’s perspective, but also because they function as a mirror in which a foreigner reflects his impressions, emotions, and viewpoints about a society that is unfamiliar and a culture that differs from his own.

Within such books, what fascinates me most are the sections that highlight cultural differences—the subtle distinctions between societies that often lead to misunderstandings and create significant barriers to communication and intercultural connection.

For instance, a gesture considered respectful in one society—such as removing one’s hat—might be perceived in another as a breach of etiquette.

Or consider a particular scenario in sun-drenched Algeria: if you wish to honor someone while walking together in the height of summer, you might take care to place them in the shade so they are comfortable and unscathed by the heat. Conversely, in Northern Europe, where sunlight is scarce, one might place the honored guest in the sun while remaining oneself in the shade, as a subtle gesture of generosity or influence.

Understanding such cultural nuances allows one to grasp much of the inevitable variation and difference between peoples—a reflection, perhaps, of the Quranic principle: “And We made you into peoples and tribes so that you may know one another” (49:13).

Social etiquette, customs, and traditions differ widely across societies and are the product of hundreds—if not thousands—of years of accumulated experience.

In Iran, for example, people are meticulous in formalities and introductions, a practice commonly referred to as ta’arof. It is customary to offer precedence to elders upon entering or leaving gatherings. Sometimes, these rituals appear excessively elaborate: one might observe two individuals exchanging polite gestures for an extended period, each insisting that the other go first. A foreign visitor, unable to grasp the custom, once remarked humorously that “Iranians are afraid of the door”—for when they finally approach it, each one shoves the other forward!

I also encountered another tourist’s anecdote about visiting Iranian mosques. He observed that the imams simply stood opposite the congregants, shouting takbir (the phrase “Allahu Akbar” [Allah is the Greatest]). Unbeknownst to him, the young man proclaiming takbir—called the mukabbir (the announcer who guides worshippers)—guides the worshippers audibly, prompting them to follow the imam’s motions during prayer, a practice that has persisted in certain mosques since the era before electronic loudspeakers were introduced.

Similarly, one custom that often surprises foreigners is that food offered during visits is typically not eaten until formally requested by the guest—and this request may be repeated multiple times (ta’arof [ritual of polite insistence]). As a result, many visits conclude without sampling the offerings, and one may leave the host’s home having neither tasted fruit nor sweets.

Let me conclude this piece with a humorous anecdote about ta’arof in Iran. A woman was at the end of her pregnancy but did not deliver for several days. Finally, she underwent an ultrasound, revealing that she was carrying twins. The first twin appeared to be waiting for the second to exit first, saying: “After you!” To which the second replied: “No, you go first!”

  1. Hamshahri (in Persian: همشهری) is a major Iranian daily newspaper founded in 1990. The name means “fellow citizen” or “co-dweller” in Persian. It is the largest Persian-language newspaper in the world.

  2. Jeem (ج) is the fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet and holds the phonetic value of the “j” sound in English. In this context, it symbolizes the moral and symbolic bridge between the author’s identity and his host country, Algeria.

  3. Zaeiri (الزائري) is the author’s surname. When the letter “Jeem” (ج) is added, it becomes Jazaeiri (الجزائري), meaning “Algerian” in Arabic. This clever linguistic play underpins the philosophical theme of identity and belonging that permeates the text.
