Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri: A Distinguished Voice in Religious Media and Cultural Diplomacy

Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri is a renowned academic specializing in religious media, Islamic philosophy, and interfaith (Islamic-Christian) dialogue. As a prolific author and eminent literary figure, he has penned over thirty works encompassing literature, translation, creative writing, and narrative arts—several of which have been translated into major foreign languages, including English and French.

With a distinguished media career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Zaeiri has established an enduring reputation in the journalistic world. He has founded numerous periodicals and magazines and served as editor-in-chief of several prominent newspapers, most notably Hamshahri (¹), the largest Persian-language daily in the world.

His influence extends well beyond journalism. A committed cultural figure, Dr. Zaeiri has made significant contributions to the fields of film and television production. He is also a leading figure in the publishing sector, having established an independent media house that has continuously issued a monthly magazine for the past 23 years.

His most recent intellectual endeavor, “In Search of the Jeem” (2), marks a new milestone in his ongoing creative exploration. This reflective series, published regularly in Al-Ayam News (Arabic) and jeune-independant.net (French), chronicles his current tenure as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in Algeria. In these writings, Dr. Zaeiri  (3) offers a deeply personal and poetic meditation on identity, belonging, and the enduring cultural bonds that unite Iran and Algeria.

Today, Dzair Tube is proud to present the English edition of this compelling series—meticulously translated from both the Arabic and French originals.

 

 

We Resolved That Algeria Shall Live

From my extensive experience in journalism and writing, I have observed a profound truth: whatever I write in anger will be read with anger; conversely, if my words are imbued with joy and delight, the audience will receive them with pleasure. Likewise, if I write through tears, the reader will feel the same sorrow and intensity of the emotions, even decades later, across hundreds or thousands of miles. Words carry a heat that transcends generations; their fervor and passion never fade or cool.

The certainty of emotion struck me the first time I heard the Algerian national anthem. We were in the “Moufdi Zakaria” Hall at the Palace of Culture. As the anthem began, the audience stood, singing its words alongside the performers, harmonizing with the melody. Each time the line “Wa ‘aqadna al-‘azm an tahya al-Jaza’ir” (“And we resolved that Algeria shall live”) was repeated, I observed the attendees intently. Some placed their hands upon their hearts; others closed their eyes, absorbed by the anthem’s resonance. I even saw one person shedding tears, moved by the power of the words.

I found myself perplexed and asked: is this anthem not heard hundreds of times? Is it not merely a formal hymn that opens every official celebration? This question lingered until I later read about Moufdi Zakaria and subsequently visited his grave in Ghardaïa. That day, I understood how the anthem’s words were born in the darkness of colonial prisons. I comprehended the burning intensity that fills the throat each time the line “And we resolved that Algeria shall live” is intoned.

Indeed, if one writes in anguish, that anguish is felt by readers even decades hence. The generations who grew up with the ideals of independence and freedom read with pride and reverence the words that Moufdi Zakaria etched with his very lifeblood in the solitude of a dark prison cell.

If he wrote in pain, the reader will feel it centuries later. If he wrote in anger, that anger will strike the reader with full force. This is precisely what we perceive in every syllable penned by Moufdi Zakaria: the agony, torment, and suffering he endured, mirrored by the relentless oppression faced by the Algerian people under the brutal yoke of French colonialism. Every ache that weighed upon his heart, every wound his spirit bore, remains vibrantly alive in the national anthem, resonating like a historical cry echoing across the collective memory.

Through his words, the poet makes us grasp the full extent of the pain, anguish, terror, destruction, and brutalities endured by the Algerian people during colonial subjugation.

Moufdi Zakaria translated all that suffering into reality through words so sublime that even Algeria’s towering mountains seem to tremble in awe, and the tallest palm trees bow in reverence to their beauty. His words possess enchantment, elegance, and resonance; they reach the ear and settle firmly in the heart. The word does not perish, the sentiment endures, and the truth remains immortal, eternal.

I witnessed a similar phenomenon on an international scale in Iran, when Iranian television aired a program during Ramadan featuring an Algerian woman. The anthem “Min Jibalina” (“From Our Mountains”) was broadcast live in honor of this courageous Algerian woman, her homeland, and the eternal martyrs of the revolution.

The guest was profoundly moved, shedding tears on air. Later, I learned that her grandfather had been a member of the National Liberation struggle, martyred under torture in French colonial prisons. That night, countless eyes in Iran wept, and the broadcast was widely circulated across social media.

One Algerian friend told me afterward: “Even I, when I hear these anthems, shiver and tears flow from my eyes. In school, they instilled in us enough love for our homeland and the Islamic nation. These anthems move us because France killed members of every Algerian family, and our martyrs’ blood still burns hot.”

Indeed, words possess life—they do not die. They remain vibrant across the ages, resonate with the consciousness of generations, and speak directly to attentive ears and awakened hearts. They continue to call out to those who retain even a fragment of loyalty to the memory of the martyrs and to the enduring mission of the homeland.

  1. Hamshahri (in Persian: همشهری) is a major Iranian daily newspaper founded in 1990. The name means “fellow citizen” or “co-dweller” in Persian. It is the largest Persian-language newspaper in the world.

  2. Jeem (ج) is the fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet and holds the phonetic value of the “j” sound in English. In this context, it symbolizes the moral and symbolic bridge between the author’s identity and his host country, Algeria.

  3. Zaeiri (الزائري) is the author’s surname. When the letter “Jeem” (ج) is added, it becomes Jazaeiri (الجزائري), meaning “Algerian” in Arabic. This clever linguistic play underpins the philosophical theme of identity and belonging that permeates the text.
