Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri: A Distinguished Voice in Religious Media and Cultural Diplomacy
Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri is a renowned academic specializing in religious media, Islamic philosophy, and interfaith (Islamic-Christian) dialogue. As a prolific author and eminent literary figure, he has penned over thirty works encompassing literature, translation, creative writing, and narrative arts—several of which have been translated into major foreign languages, including English and French.
With a distinguished media career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Zaeiri has established an enduring reputation in the journalistic world. He has founded numerous periodicals and magazines and served as editor-in-chief of several prominent newspapers, most notably Hamshahri (¹), the largest Persian-language daily in the world.
His influence extends well beyond journalism. A committed cultural figure, Dr. Zaeiri has made significant contributions to the fields of film and television production. He is also a leading figure in the publishing sector, having established an independent media house that has continuously issued a monthly magazine for the past 23 years.
His most recent intellectual endeavor, “In Search of the Jeem” (2), marks a new milestone in his ongoing creative exploration. This reflective series, published regularly in Al-Ayam News (Arabic) and jeune-independant.net (French), chronicles his current tenure as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in Algeria. In these writings, Dr. Zaeiri (3) offers a deeply personal and poetic meditation on identity, belonging, and the enduring cultural bonds that unite Iran and Algeria.

When Truth Speaks in the Language of Simple People
Amid the clamor and bustle of the doctor’s clinic, the secretary approached the woman seated in front of my wife and asked her something in Algerian Darja that we could not fully grasp, gesturing toward us. We did not catch her exact words, yet we understood that she was asking the woman: whose turn was it first?
The woman pointed toward us and answered with complete honesty that we had arrived before her at the clinic, even though she could have easily claimed otherwise. Of course, we would not have understood her, nor would we have minded if she had taken our turn and seen the doctor first.
When we entered the consultation room, the doctor examined my daughter without charging a fee. Observing my astonishment and my insistence on paying for the medical service, he said: “No, this is just a follow-up; I do not take anything.” And yet, it would have been entirely within his right to charge for his time and effort spent examining my daughter.
A few days later, I went to purchase bread from a grocery store. When I attempted to pay, the shopkeeper said: “Do not take this bread; it has expired.” He refused to sell it to me, even though it was the very last bag he had in stock. He could have remained silent, sold the bread, and pocketed the payment—but he did not.
Such integrity and conscientiousness, which I observed repeatedly among Algerians, are truly worthy of admiration.
This scenario repeated itself during Ramadan, with a young doctor who provided exceptional assistance in tending to my daughter’s medical needs. Although he was expected to return home for Iftar, he remained until he was certain that her condition was stable. We exchanged mobile numbers afterward, and I was pleasantly surprised when he called two days later to inquire about her well-being.
On another occasion, we encountered a group of young people on the beach in Oran. They were listening to music and playing cards. When they noticed us, and saw a family nearby, they immediately rose and apologized repeatedly. Despite being of an age where misbehavior or impoliteness might be expected, their conduct was nothing but exemplary—marked by civility, integrity, and impeccable manners.
Such noble behavior and elevated social ethics deserve genuine recognition and commendation.
Some readers may ask, as I have been asked repeatedly: “Did you not encounter negative aspects in Algeria, and yet you continually praise the country and mention only the positives?”
The answer is straightforward: yes, every country and every society has its flaws, and every human being has shortcomings. Yet, in Algeria, I encountered far more positives than negatives. The few shortcomings I witnessed are commonplace in every society and easily surmountable.
Moreover, as Muslims and believers, we are called to emulate the bee, as stated in the noble Hadith: “The example of the believer is like the bee: it consumes good and produces good.” I strive to live accordingly, focusing my attention on what is virtuous and uplifting.
Indeed, I have experienced bitter moments during my stay in Algeria—instances of misguided conduct or errors that caused me distress, and events that left an unfavorable impression. Yet I choose not to dwell on them, for they are exceedingly rare compared to the wealth of sweet, luminous memories that continue to resonate in my mind, heart, and soul.
I am confident that my recollections of Algeria will endure like a sumptuous banquet, abundant with exquisite dishes and delightful sweets, open to all who wish to read or hear about this extraordinary land long after my departure.

Hamshahri (in Persian: همشهری) is a major Iranian daily newspaper founded in 1990. The name means “fellow citizen” or “co-dweller” in Persian. It is the largest Persian-language newspaper in the world.

Jeem (ج) is the fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet and holds the phonetic value of the “j” sound in English. In this context, it symbolizes the moral and symbolic bridge between the author’s identity and his host country, Algeria.
