Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri: A Distinguished Voice in Religious Media and Cultural Diplomacy
Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri is a renowned academic specializing in religious media, Islamic philosophy, and interfaith (Islamic-Christian) dialogue. As a prolific author and eminent literary figure, he has penned over thirty works encompassing literature, translation, creative writing, and narrative arts—several of which have been translated into major foreign languages, including English and French.
With a distinguished media career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Zaeiri has established an enduring reputation in the journalistic world. He has founded numerous periodicals and magazines and served as editor-in-chief of several prominent newspapers, most notably Hamshahri (¹), the largest Persian-language daily in the world.
His influence extends well beyond journalism. A committed cultural figure, Dr. Zaeiri has made significant contributions to the fields of film and television production. He is also a leading figure in the publishing sector, having established an independent media house that has continuously issued a monthly magazine for the past 23 years.
His most recent intellectual endeavor, “In Search of the Jeem” (2), marks a new milestone in his ongoing creative exploration. This reflective series, published regularly in Al-Ayam News (Arabic) and jeune-independant.net (French), chronicles his current tenure as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in Algeria. In these writings, Dr. Zaeiri (3) offers a deeply personal and poetic meditation on identity, belonging, and the enduring cultural bonds that unite Iran and Algeria.

Will I Miss You, Beloved Algeria?
One of the Algerian sisters asked my wife, “Will you miss Algeria?”
She replied: “Yes, of course. We will miss the land and the sea, the trees and the buildings, the breeze and the air. We will miss all of these surroundings, yet above all else, we will miss the good people. People whose hearts know no arrogance or pretension, whose conduct is untainted by the need to prove who is superior, more important, or higher in rank than others.”
This is the essence of the Algerian people we encountered: the overwhelming majority are exceedingly kind. As I always say, one feels their hearts in their eyes, their abundant goodness in their souls, and the vast mercy that resides in them.
And how could I not miss this country, having traversed the diverse epochs of its history and explored its multifaceted geography?
How could I not long for it, having lived among its eminent personalities—freedom fighters, thinkers, writers, and scholars?
My experience writing Famous Algerian Personalities in Persian alone was enough to make me yearn for Algeria. When I set out to introduce seventy Algerian figures to readers, the endeavor coincided with the seventieth anniversary of the November First Revolution. I immersed myself in reading, researching, and inquiring—through which I came to know many of Algeria’s great men and women.
I became certain—as I once stated in a press interview—that Algeria’s wealth does not lie in oil or gas, nor in its underground minerals, but in what rises above the earth: in its remarkable human figures and towering personalities born of this land.
The research journey was both profound and exhilarating. It allowed me to pause over every detail in books and manuscripts, to search every library and cabinet, to examine every minutiae of this country across its diverse eras.
I wept with the confessions of Saint Augustine, and I drank coffee with Miguel de Cervantes—the author of Don Quixote—in his cave at the heart of the capital, Algiers.
I began my journey with the hermitages of Sidi Boumediene Al-Ghawth and concluded with Sheikh Abdelrahman Al-Tha’alibi. I pledged allegiance to Emir Abdelkader beneath a plane tree, and I felt pride before the valor of the freedom fighter Lalla Fatma N’Soumer.
I chanted with Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis: “The people of Algeria are Muslim,” and I read with Sheikh Bashir Al-Ibrahimi the loftiest of poems. I sat with the thinker Malik Bennabi, learning from him and posing my question: Why are we Muslim?
I whispered with Mufdi Zakaria in the darkness of his cell, as he inscribed his words in blood upon its walls:
By the relentless torrents that strike—
and by the pure, flowing blood…
I wandered the alleys and streets with Djamila Boupacha, seeking the traps of the ruthless French occupier. I suffered alongside Mustafa Ben Boulaïd in his campaigns and struggles, and I shared the pain of Larbi Ben M’hidi as he inscribed the greatest acts of heroism under torture.
I read the stories of Abdelhamid Benhadouga and Tahar Ouettar, and I rejoiced and shouted with Houari Boumediene at the triumph of the National Liberation Revolution.
I spent long evenings with the thinker and writer Mouloud Kacem Naït Belkacem, who explained to me much of what was happening in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
I lived the varied circumstances of Algeria—through imagination, reading, reflection, and writing.
Today, I carry with me a heart beating with love, a body yearning to return, and a spirit longing to soar over the skies of this country.
I bear a mind filled with positive visions for Algeria’s future, and for its unconquered soil—soil that draws hearts, binds souls, and calls spirits toward it… and it is no wonder, for it is soaked with the pure blood of martyrs!
