Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri: A Distinguished Voice in Religious Media and Cultural Diplomacy

Dr. Mohammad Reza Zaeiri is a renowned academic specializing in religious media, Islamic philosophy, and interfaith (Islamic-Christian) dialogue. As a prolific author and eminent literary figure, he has penned over thirty works encompassing literature, translation, creative writing, and narrative arts—several of which have been translated into major foreign languages, including English and French.

With a distinguished media career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Dr. Zaeiri has established an enduring reputation in the journalistic world. He has founded numerous periodicals and magazines and served as editor-in-chief of several prominent newspapers, most notably Hamshahri (¹), the largest Persian-language daily in the world.

His influence extends well beyond journalism. A committed cultural figure, Dr. Zaeiri has made significant contributions to the fields of film and television production. He is also a leading figure in the publishing sector, having established an independent media house that has continuously issued a monthly magazine for the past 23 years.

His most recent intellectual endeavor, “In Search of the Jeem” (2), marks a new milestone in his ongoing creative exploration. This reflective series, published regularly in Al-Ayam News (Arabic) and jeune-independant.net (French), chronicles his current tenure as Iran’s Cultural Counselor in Algeria. In these writings, Dr. Zaeiri  (3) offers a deeply personal and poetic meditation on identity, belonging, and the enduring cultural bonds that unite Iran and Algeria.

We Eat Fresh Vegetables!

When I began my daily life within Algerian society, I started observing every small and large detail of the lifestyle of Algerians, both to learn and, subsequently, to adapt. There is much in Algerian culture that invites reflection. I was particularly struck by the fact that people generally do not stockpile food for extended periods. I noticed the absence of large refrigerators in most homes, and observed that individuals purchase provisions according to the needs of the day, acquiring fresh vegetables, meat, eggs, and other household essentials daily.

This approach is, above all, a healthy one, and aligns closely with Islamic cultural and religious values. Indeed, prophetic traditions advise against hoarding food, such as vegetables, and in the sacred sayings of God it is conveyed—roughly—that He does not demand from His servant the sustenance of tomorrow: “O My servant, I do not wish from you the worship of tomorrow; do not ask Me for tomorrow’s provision.”

Consuming fresh vegetables and newly sourced food not only invigorates healthy markets and shields them from economic exploitation, but also safeguards the human body against modern diseases that have proliferated in recent decades due to the excessive consumption of processed and imported foods, as well as the growing prevalence of fast food and its attendant health risks—particularly when consumed frequently—alongside sugary drinks and highly processed foods that stray far from their natural state, no matter how strictly nutritional standards are applied.

One of the distinguishing features of life in Algerian society, despite its exposure to global influences like any other society, is its preservation of preparing wholesome meals from fresh, unprocessed ingredients in homes. Even restaurants tend to adhere to a baseline standard of healthy and clean food.

There are certain similarities between eating habits in Iran and Algeria, yet there are also notable contrasts. In Iran, for example, we are accustomed to consuming fresh, crisp vegetables at the table. While some vegetables are typically cooked and incorporated into stews or used to garnish dishes, others—such as basil, mint, radish, and parsley—are served raw alongside meals, providing numerous health benefits and preserving nutrients that might otherwise be lost through cooking. Yogurt also holds a customary place on the Iranian table.

Fresh vegetables not only enhance the visual appeal of a meal but also lend it a vibrant palette of colors—the deep red of radishes, the pale white of scallions amidst other vegetables. Moreover, consuming fresh produce revitalizes and energizes the body. Such meals achieve an unparalleled balance, combining nutritional value, health benefits, and aesthetic appeal on a single table.

Of course, certain grains and vegetables familiar in Iran are not found in Algeria, and vice versa. These differences stem from variations in geography, climate, soil, and vegetation between the two countries. Such distinctions encourage travelers and enthusiasts of cultural discovery to explore other nations, observing local customs, etiquette, and lifestyle—even in seemingly minor details, such as the inclusion of fresh vegetables served alongside the main dish.

  1. Hamshahri (in Persian: همشهری) is a major Iranian daily newspaper founded in 1990. The name means “fellow citizen” or “co-dweller” in Persian. It is the largest Persian-language newspaper in the world.

  2. Jeem (ج) is the fifth letter of the Arabic alphabet and holds the phonetic value of the “j” sound in English. In this context, it symbolizes the moral and symbolic bridge between the author’s identity and his host country, Algeria.

  3. Zaeiri (الزائري) is the author’s surname. When the letter “Jeem” (ج) is added, it becomes Jazaeiri (الجزائري), meaning “Algerian” in Arabic. This clever linguistic play underpins the philosophical theme of identity and belonging that permeates the text.
