Algiers – November 2025 – In a solemn and deeply symbolic ceremony held Thursday morning in the heart of the Algerian capital, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and his spouse inaugurated a commemorative stele dedicated to President Hồ Chí Minh on the boulevard that proudly bears his name. The event, part of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Algeria, reaffirmed the unwavering friendship and shared revolutionary legacy uniting the two nations.
Stretching three kilometres along Algiers’ breathtaking east-west axis overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Boulevard Hồ Chi Minh is far more than a thoroughfare. Its starting point marks the historic location where Algerian revolutionary fighters fired the first shots of the liberation war in November 1954—months after Vietnam’s decisive victory at Điện Biên Phủ. It is a symbolic convergence of two nations that rose against colonial domination and carved their independence through sacrifice and resilience.
The ceremony saw the Vietnamese Prime Minister and his wife lay flowers at the foot of the memorial stele, expressing profound respect and gratitude for the Vietnamese leader whose legacy continues to inspire both peoples. The newly unveiled monument recounts the life and revolutionary journey of President Hồ Chí Minh in Arabic and Vietnamese, serving as a permanent testament to his global influence and his historic ties with Algeria.
The stele recalls President Hồ Chí Minh’s pivotal role in the liberation of Vietnam. On 2 September 1945, he proclaimed the Declaration of Independence that founded the Democratic Republic of Vietnam—today the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. But his vision and solidarity extended beyond Asia. Hồ Chí Minh stood firmly with the Algerian people throughout their struggle for national liberation, forging one of the earliest bridges between the two revolutions.
His contributions to Algerian-Vietnamese solidarity were far-reaching: co-founding Le Paria in 1922 with Algerian and international revolutionaries; visiting Biskra in 1946; and becoming one of the first world leaders to recognize the Provisional Government of Algeria in 1958. These historic acts laid the foundation for the remarkable tradition of friendship between the two countries.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính highlighted the shared history of mutual support in the battles for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stressed that this solidarity—born of struggle—continues to guide both nations as they work to build a prosperous and stable future.
He called on the peoples of Algeria and Vietnam to transmit this legacy to future generations, ensuring that the bonds of friendship are constantly renewed. The Vietnamese Premier expressed deep appreciation to the Algerian government and people, particularly the residents of Algiers and those living along Boulevard Hồ Chí Minh, for their enduring affection toward President Hồ Chí Minh and the Vietnamese nation.
