Algiers, Algeria | December 4th, 2024 — In a momentous ceremony held in Algiers, the official inauguration of the Namibian Embassy marked a significant milestone in the strengthening of diplomatic and bilateral ties between Algeria and Namibia. The event, attended by key officials from both nations, underscored the mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas critical to their shared interests.
Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the long-standing, deep-rooted relationship between the two countries. In his address, Attaf underscored the need for continued efforts to deepen cooperation to better meet the aspirations of both peoples. He highlighted the numerous commonalities that define the relationship between Algeria and Namibia, particularly in the realms of justice, freedom, and the fight for human rights on the international stage. “Algeria and Namibia have always stood by righteous causes, particularly the struggle for justice and freedom, including the issues of Western Sahara and Palestine,” Attaf said, reaffirming the countries’ united stance on key global matters.
Attaf also noted the shared commitment to African unity and economic integration, pointing to the mutual support for strengthening political solidarity on the continent. Both Algeria and Namibia advocate for a world order based on justice, fairness, and inclusivity, a message that has gained increasing resonance as both nations continue to push for meaningful change on the global stage.
Peya Mushelenga, Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, spoke with gratitude and admiration about Algeria’s unwavering support during Namibia’s struggle for independence. Reflecting on history, Mushelenga recalled the vital contribution made by Algeria, specifically the provision of arms to the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) during its liberation war. “We still remember the weapons donation to the president of SWAPO, which was a turning point in our struggle for freedom,” Mushelenga said, referencing a pivotal moment in Namibia’s liberation. He also highlighted Algeria’s role in the training of key figures in Namibia’s fight for independence, such as Dimo Hamaambo, and recalled the shared revolutionary spirit between leaders like Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel, who had similarly received support from Algeria in their respective struggles.
Mushelenga also echoed the alignment between Algeria and Namibia in advocating for the right to self-determination for peoples still under colonial domination. Both countries remain staunch advocates for the independence of the Sahrawi people and the Palestinian cause, which Mushelenga described as a case of genocide. The Namibian minister emphasized that the inauguration of the embassy not only represents a diplomatic achievement but also a deepened commitment to international solidarity in the pursuit of justice, human rights, and global peace.
The opening of the Namibian Embassy in Algeria is more than just a symbolic gesture; it represents a concrete step toward reinforcing the bonds between two countries united by a shared history, mutual respect, and a collective vision for a fairer, more just world. It serves as a testament to the enduring commitment of both nations to defend the principles of freedom, justice, and human dignity on the international stage, as well as to bolster their strategic cooperation for the betterment of their peoples and the African continent as a whole.
