The Embassy of India in Algiers commemorated the 77th Republic Day of India on Monday, 26 January 2026, with an official ceremony that included a flag-unfurling ritual held in the presence of the Indian community, alongside members of the media and students. The event formed part of India’s annual national observance marking the adoption of its Constitution and the formal establishment of the country as a sovereign democratic republic.
On this occasion, a message from the President of the Republic of India, Droupadi Murmu, was delivered by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy. In her address, President Murmu underlined India’s strong economic performance, noting that the country has emerged as one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world, maintaining sustained growth despite prevailing global challenges. The message highlighted India’s resilience, institutional strength, and long-term developmental vision.
In his remarks, the Chargé d’Affaires emphasized the depth and historical strength of Algerian–Indian relations, expressing hope for the continued expansion of cooperation and partnership between the two countries across political, economic, cultural, educational, and humanitarian fields. The ceremony also featured a symbolic cultural moment, during which Algerian female students were honored after reciting poetry celebrating India, reflecting the people-to-people dimension of bilateral ties.
Grand National Celebrations in India
India officially ushered in its 77th Republic Day with a grand national parade held along Kartavya Path in New Delhi, showcasing the country’s military capabilities, institutional discipline, and cultural diversity. The celebrations featured advanced weapon systems, including BrahMos and Akash missiles, the Suryastra rocket launcher, the Arjun Main Battle Tank, and a wide array of indigenously developed defense platforms.
The Republic Day Parade was attended by high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, senior cabinet members, top military leadership, foreign diplomats, and distinguished guests. The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, attended the ceremony as Chief Guests, reflecting India’s engagement with key international partners.
The overarching theme of the 2026 celebrations was “150 Years of Vande Mataram”, placing India’s national song at the heart of the observance. Around 100 artists opened the parade with a cultural presentation themed “Vividata Mein Ekta” (Unity in Diversity), followed by larger performances involving approximately 2,500 artists, highlighting the country’s cultural plurality and shared national identity.
Republic Day as a Constitutional Milestone
Republic Day marks a defining moment in India’s national journey. While 15 August 1947 ended colonial rule, it was the coming into force of the Constitution on 26 January 1950 that completed India’s transition to self-governance based on constitutional supremacy, democratic accountability, and the sovereignty of the people. Each year, Republic Day brings constitutional values into the public sphere through national ceremonies, state-level events, flag-hoisting programs, and cultural activities across the country.
The 77th Republic Day celebrations featured 30 tableaux presented by States, Union Territories, and central ministries, organized around the themes “Swatantrata Ka Mantra – Vande Mataram” and “Samriddhi Ka Mantra – Atmanirbhar Bharat.” In addition, nearly 10,000 special guests—including farmers, artisans, scientists, innovators, women entrepreneurs, students, sportspersons, and frontline workers—were invited, reinforcing the inclusive character of the national celebration.
From Purna Swaraj to the Republic
The choice of 26 January as Republic Day carries deep historical symbolism. On 26 January 1930, Indians across the country observed Purna Swaraj Day, formally committing themselves to the goal of complete independence. This aspiration later translated into institution-building through the Constituent Assembly, which first convened on 9 December 1946 and worked for nearly three years to draft the Constitution.
India attained independence on 15 August 1947, restoring political sovereignty to its people. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949, following extensive deliberations on democratic governance, rights, social justice, and institutional balance. When the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950, India was formally proclaimed a Sovereign Democratic Republic—later amended to include the terms Socialist and Secular—thereby anchoring governance firmly in constitutional law and popular sovereignty.
The Architect of the Indian Constitution
The drafting of the Constitution of India was led by Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, widely regarded as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. As Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar played a decisive role in shaping the legal and institutional foundations of the Republic. Drawing on comparative constitutional law and guided by principles of liberty, equality, and social justice, he steered the drafting process through complex debates and deliberations. His intellectual rigor and unwavering commitment ensured that the Constitution emerged as a comprehensive framework safeguarding fundamental rights, democratic governance, and the rule of law, while addressing the social realities of a diverse and plural society.
Dr. Ambedkar’s Memorial and Enduring Legacy
Chaitya Bhoomi, located in Dadar, Mumbai, Maharashtra, is a significant Buddhist chaitya and the final resting place of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a key figure in the resurgence of Buddhism in India. Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy is preserved and honored through this memorial, where he was cremated. The site has since become a national place of remembrance, drawing millions of visitors annually, particularly on 6 December, the anniversary of his death, observed as Mahaparinirvan Diwas. Every year, countless devotees gather at Chaitya Bhoomi to pay their respects and commemorate his life and contributions.
In Buddhism, a chaitya refers to a sacred space primarily used for worship, characterized by a stupa, a rounded apse, a high vaulted roof, pillars, aisles, and chaitya windows that allow natural light to filter into the hall. Chaityas, originating around the 3rd century BCE in India, played a vital role in the spread of Buddhism, serving as hubs for worship, education, and communal gatherings. Unlike viharas, which function as monastic dwellings, chaityas are dedicated spaces for devotion, centered around the stupa.
Republic Day today stands as a living affirmation of India’s constitutional values, combining ceremonial tradition with civic participation. The day begins with a tribute at the National War Memorial, honoring fallen soldiers, followed by the main parade at Kartavya Path. Marching contingents, mechanized columns, cultural tableaux, bravery awards, and the Indian Air Force fly-past collectively present a unified image of national strength, diversity, and discipline.
The celebrations formally conclude on 29 January with the Beating the Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk, a centuries-old military tradition marking the end of Republic Day observances.
