๐๐ต๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ โ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ป๐พ๐ช๐ป๐ ๐๐๐๐ โ Indian companies are increasingly positioning Algeria as a priority investment destination, viewing the country as a strategic gateway to European and African markets, as evidenced by discussions held during a high-level business forum organized by the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) in Algiers.
The forum brought together Algerian economic operators and a broad delegation of Indian counterparts to explore concrete opportunities for cooperation, partnership and direct investment across a wide range of sectors, against the backdrop of a marked upswing in bilateral relations and a business climate described by participants as promising and conducive to growth.
Indian operators expressed strong interest in expanding and consolidating their presence in Algeria, citing the countryโs economic reforms, its improving legal and regulatory framework, and its strategic geographical positioning. Talks focused on sectors with high added-value potential, notably the pharmaceutical industry, regarded as a strategic pillar, alongside mechanical industries, agriculture, industrial equipment, advanced technologies and manufacturing.
Discussions also addressed the establishment of joint ventures, the development of mixed enterprises and the promotion of productive, long-term investments capable of generating technology transfer and sustainable employment.
Speaking on the occasion, CACI President Tayeb Chebab underlined that the forum reflected the shared determination of Algeria and India to elevate their economic and trade relations to match their untapped potential. He stressed that bilateral trade could be significantly expanded thanks to Algeriaโs attractive business environment, streamlined administrative procedures, evolving investment legislation and active support for exports toward African and Arab markets with which Algeria maintains preferential trade agreements.
Chebab called on Indian investors to actively contribute to Algeriaโs economic diversification strategy, particularly through technology transfer, skills development and value-added industrial projects.
For her part, Sihem Nafaa, Director of Promotion and Support of Economic Exchanges at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the โsolidity of bilateral relations,โ emphasizing that such forums are essential to identifying win-win partnerships. She noted that Algeriaโs strategic location, the quality of its infrastructure and its legal framework collectively provide favorable conditions for value creation and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Indiaโs Ambassador to Algeria, Dr. Swati Vijay Kulkarni, recalled that this delegation represents the second Indian business mission to Algeria within a single month, following the recent visit of a major pharmaceutical-focused delegation. She pointed to the diversity of sectors represented, including automotive, textiles, agri-food industries, chemicals and engineering, and stressed the importance of B2B meetings in translating political goodwill into tangible economic projects.
The ambassador also reaffirmed the strength and positive momentum of Algerian-Indian relations, further bolstered by the โhistoricโ visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Algeria in October 2024 and the organization of the first Indo-Algerian Business Forum. She underlined the growing perception among Indian investors of Algeria as a strategic access point to Europe and Africa.
In a context marked by Algeriaโs ongoing economic diversification and the sustained growth of the Indian economy, Ambassador Kulkarni expressed confidence in the emergence of new, mutually beneficial partnerships, calling on operators from both countries to deepen cooperation based on shared interests.
Meanwhile, Manish Sharma, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), stated that the mission aims to translate the strong political relations between India and Algeria into concrete commercial outcomes. He described the Algerian market as a โstrategic entry pointโ for Indian companies seeking to expand across Africa, adding that Indian enterprises are well positioned to supply high-quality products that meet international standards at competitive prices.
This visit builds on the momentum generated by the recent Indo-Algerian business forum in Algiers, focused on the pharmaceutical industry, epitomizing a deliberate and structured strategy to deepen bilateral economic engagement across multiple high-priority sectors. The Forum convened nearly 100 Indian operators representing more than 65 pharmaceutical companies, signaling robust interest in tangible investment ventures within Algeria.

Against this backdrop, Algeria and India appear poised to translate their historically grounded friendship into a forward-looking economic partnership commensurate with their respective ambitions. Rooted in a shared anti-colonial legacy and reinforced by decades of political alignment within the Non-Aligned Movement, bilateral relations today are entering a phase defined less by symbolism and more by strategic convergence and tangible outcomes. As Algeria advances its vision of economic diversification and regional leadership, and as India consolidates its ascent as a global economic powerhouse, the convergence of interests between the two countries offers a rare window of opportunity for mutually reinforcing growth.
The breadth of sectors identified for cooperationโranging from infrastructure, energy, and heavy industry to pharmaceuticals, digital technologies, and agri-industryโunderscores the depth of untapped potential awaiting activation. Yet beyond figures and forecasts, it is the renewed political will at the highest levels, coupled with a shared commitment to SouthโSouth cooperation, that lends substance to these prospects. In this sense, the AlgerianโIndian relationship is no longer confined to the memory of a โhistorical friendship,โ but is steadily being reshaped into a pragmatic, resilient, and future-oriented partnershipโone capable of generating sustainable value, strengthening economic sovereignty, and contributing to stability and development across Africa, Asia, and beyond.
In 2024, the evolving dynamic found its concrete expression in the state visit of the President of India, Droupadi Murmu to Algeria, amplifying the historical momentum underpinning bilateral ties. Marking the first high-level Indian visit in yearsโafter former Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansariโs visit in 2016 and the journey of Indiaโs Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri Morlidan, in 2021โthis engagement underscores that AlgeriaโIndia relations are entering a stage where strategic alignment and practical cooperation take precedence over ceremonial diplomacy.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in July 1962, the two nations have cultivated a resilient partnership grounded in a shared anti-colonial struggle and membership in the founding cohort of the Non-Aligned Movement. Over decades, this relationship has matured across multiple domains, institutionalized through structured mechanisms for dialogue and consultation, most notably the parliamentary friendship group inaugurated in 2020. Shared perspectives on countering terrorism, extremism, and promoting global security provide a firm platform for expanding collaboration across critical economic sectors.
Under the renewed leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and President Murmu, both countries are actively pursuing diversified strategic partnerships. High-level exchanges, including Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs recent congratulatory message on President Tebbouneโs re-election, have reaffirmed the depth of mutual trust, shared convictions, and alignment on regional and international matters. Simultaneously, India has emphasized its commitment to expanding and deepening cooperation for the mutual benefit of both peoples.
Complementing these political foundations, legal and regulatory frameworks are being strengthened through ongoing negotiations on double taxation avoidance, customs cooperation, and investment promotion and protection agreements, while business-to-business interactions are intensifying to generate tangible outcomes.
Key areas of cooperation span infrastructure, heavy industry, mechanical engineering, hydrocarbons, electricity, mining, and railways, alongside pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture, petrochemicals, fertilizer production, phosphate and iron processing, desalination, and ICT. Looking forward, both nations aspire to achieve substantial growth over the next five years, with Algeria targeting a GDP of approximately $400 billion by 2027 to assert itself as a leading African economy, while India aims to become the worldโs third-largest economy by the same horizon, sustaining annual growth of around 7 percent.
