Infantino in Algiers: “President Tebboune is a Great Man for Algeria” — FIFA Chief Extends World Cup Invitation, Exchanges Gifts, and Reaffirms Deepening Football Cooperation
By Dr. Hana Saada
The visit of FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Algiers has underscored Algeria’s growing visibility within global football governance, culminating in notably warm exchanges with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and renewed commitments to deepen cooperation in sport development.
Following his official reception at the Presidential Palace, Infantino described his meeting with President Tebboune as “a great honour,” expressing particular appreciation for the hospitality extended during his stay in Algeria. In remarks that drew attention across diplomatic and sporting circles, the FIFA chief characterised President Tebboune as “a great man for Algeria” and a figure with “strong expertise in football,” signalling an unusually personal tone in institutional football diplomacy.
The discussions between the two sides focused on the current trajectory of Algerian football and its structural evolution, including youth development frameworks, infrastructure investment, and competitive performance at international level. According to Infantino, the exchange reflected a shared interest in strengthening the foundations of the sport in a country where football retains significant social and cultural weight.
A key highlight of the visit was Infantino’s confirmation that he had extended a formal invitation to President Tebboune to attend the FIFA World Cup, further reinforcing the symbolic alignment between Algeria’s political leadership and global football institutions at a moment of heightened sporting ambition.
The FIFA President also congratulated Algeria on its qualification for the 2026 World Cup, describing the achievement as a marker of progress and consistency for the national team. He expressed confidence in Algeria’s squad, noting that it possesses the potential to “surprise at the tournament,” reflecting growing international recognition of the team’s competitive profile.
Infantino further pointed to Algeria’s demographic and diaspora dimension—home to nearly 50 million people and a large global community—as a strategic asset in the country’s football ecosystem and talent development potential.
During the visit, President Tebboune also received symbolic gifts from the FIFA President, in what was described as a gesture of goodwill underscoring the cordial tone of the engagement.
Beyond the presidential meeting, Infantino attended the inauguration of a new regional technical centre in Tlemcen, a project designed to strengthen youth training structures and expand Algeria’s football development infrastructure.
The Tlemcen Regional Technical Centre, developed within the framework of FIFA’s “Forward Programme,” spans 38,125 square metres and includes accommodation facilities with 145 rooms, multiple training pitches (natural, hybrid, and synthetic surfaces), a futsal hall, medical and fitness centres, a swimming pool, conference facilities, administrative offices, as well as full boarding and catering infrastructure.
In this vein, Infantino described the facility as a “true jewel,” stating that Algeria stands as “an example at global level” in its commitment to youth development and sports infrastructure. He added that such technical centres are essential for the emergence of future international talent and confirmed FIFA’s intention to further support investment in schools, training centres, and football infrastructure across the country.
A secondary inauguration was also conducted during the visit, with the opening of a new football pitch at the Inal-Sid Ahmed middle school in the Bouhanak district of Mansourah, reinforcing the emphasis on linking sports development with educational environments.
The visit comes as Algeria accelerates investment in sports infrastructure and seeks to position itself more firmly within continental and global football networks. In this context, the engagement with FIFA signals not only sporting cooperation, but also Algeria’s broader ambition to consolidate its role as an emerging hub for football development in Africa.
