“Innov Tech” Hackathon Marks a New Milestone in Algeria’s Digital Transformation

Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria’s accelerating march toward a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy took a decisive step forward on Sunday with the closing ceremony of the national “Innov Tech” hackathon, jointly presided over by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari and Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises Noureddine Ouadah.
Dedicated to advanced 5G applications and emerging technologies, the three-day competition unfolded in a dynamic atmosphere that reflected the state’s growing ambition to transform universities from traditional centers of instruction into productive hubs of technological innovation.
Across the event, students from across the country worked intensively, racing against the clock to design sophisticated technological solutions. Nine teams were ultimately awarded prizes across three strategic categories, with awards ranging from 200,000 to 700,000 DZD. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Baddari described this inaugural edition—organized in partnership with Djezzy and the National Agency for the Promotion of Research Results and Technological Development (ANVREDET)—as “a marker of the decisive moment the Algerian university is living,” fully aligned with the vision of the President of the Republic.
Baddari emphasized the strategic significance of the intensive 72-hour innovation sprint. “Students have demonstrated that our national competencies are now capable of developing complete solutions in the field of 5G, a sector in which Algeria is determined to take a leading role,” he affirmed. Far from being a mere exercise in creativity, the hackathon, he said, functions as a launch pad for technological entrepreneurship. The winning projects—largely rooted in artificial intelligence, advanced programming, and immersive technologies—are expected to evolve into nine startups, a transition the minister describes as “natural” in a university system actively contributing to the construction of a sovereign digital economy. “Each student engaged in this event contributes, in their own way, to building an emerging and technologically independent Algeria by 2027,” Baddari declared.
For his part, Minister Noureddine Ouadah situated the competition within a broader national strategy centered on a knowledge-based economic transition, one where youth are not bystanders but central actors. He stressed that the hackathon embodies a renewed dynamism, coinciding with Global Entrepreneurship Week and demonstrating the evolving role of universities as creators of economic value. “Students are now mentored and supported to launch projects before even receiving their degrees. Universities are becoming active contributors to value creation, and research centers are transforming into solution-driven hubs rather than merely academic institutions,” he stated.
Ouadah underscored the emergence of a unified ecosystem linking universities, students, startups, and economic institutions. These actors, he insisted, “must evolve within the same ecosystem”—a synergy that reduces technological dependency, enhances mastery of local innovation, and builds a reservoir of entrepreneurs capable of addressing national needs.
The nine award-winning teams were recognized for projects ranging from industrial 5G applications to immersive technologies and digital-inclusion solutions. All will receive dedicated support to transition their prototypes into market-ready companies integrated into Algeria’s innovation landscape.
