IOM Hails Algeria as a Humanitarian Beacon in Migrant and Refugee Care

Algiers, Algeria– Wednesday, July 16, 2025 |  In a resolute affirmation of Algeria’s humanitarian and health leadership, Ms. Lalini Verasamy, Representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Algeria, commended the country’s comprehensive and compassionate approach to migrant and refugee care. Speaking during a strategic meeting with Minister of Health Abdelhak Saihi, Verasamy described Algeria’s health response as a “living model of humanity,” particularly in the field of medical support for refugees and migrants of diverse nationalities.

The meeting, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, served as a platform for reviewing ongoing cooperation programs between the IOM and Algeria’s health sector, while also laying the groundwork for broader bilateral engagement. According to the Ministry’s statement released Wednesday, both parties explored new avenues to deepen and expand the partnership, especially in health-related humanitarian interventions.

Minister Saihi used the occasion to present a detailed overview of Algeria’s national strategy for migrant and refugee care, emphasizing the country’s commitment to logistical, medical, and humanitarian support across its public health institutions. “Algeria provides essential healthcare services and emergency response mechanisms for all refugees on its territory, regardless of their origin,” he affirmed, reiterating the nation’s long-standing policy of non-discrimination and inclusivity in the health sector.

A key highlight of the dialogue was the Minister’s proposal to establish an international center for vaccination and the fight against tropical diseases in Algeria, a project that would serve not only national needs but also bolster regional health security across North and Sub-Saharan Africa.

In response, the IOM’s representative welcomed the proposal and offered the Organization’s logistical and medical expertise in supporting such an endeavor. She emphasized the importance of containing infectious diseases among refugee populations, noting that such efforts are critical to minimizing public health risks in host communities as well. Verasamy also reaffirmed the IOM’s firm commitment to expanding cooperation with Algeria in various health fields, including disease prevention, emergency medical response, and health infrastructure resilience.

To formalize this renewed collaboration, both parties agreed to form a joint working group tasked with drafting a bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU). The MoU, expected to be signed in the near future, will institutionalize cooperation frameworks between Algeria and the IOM in healthcare delivery and humanitarian assistance.
