Istanbul Declaration Hails Algeria’s Leadership at the UN Security Council

OIC Foreign Ministers commend Algeria’s active diplomacy in support of Islamic causes and call for urgent international action to end Zionist aggression.

Algiers, Algeria | June 23rd, 2025 — The 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul, concluded with a declaration voicing firm support for Algeria’s constructive and commendable efforts as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

The Istanbul Declaration, issued at the close of the two-day session, underscored the tangible diplomatic strides made by Algeria — alongside Pakistan and Somalia — in defending Islamic causes and championing peace and justice on the international stage.

Palestinian Cause Remains the Core Issue

The Declaration reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause as the OIC’s core concern, reiterating unwavering support for the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and contiguous Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds as its capital. It emphasized that the two-state solution remains the only viable path to achieve lasting peace and regional stability.

Participants strongly condemned the genocidal war waged by the Zionist entity in the Gaza Strip for over 19 months, as well as the relentless campaign of destruction and targeted killings across the West Bank, including Al-Quds. These actions were denounced as systematic efforts to erase the Palestinian cause and deny the people their right to self-determination.

Firm Rejection of Forced Displacement

The Istanbul Declaration issued an unequivocal rejection of any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land, condemning it as a grave violation of international law and a direct assault on the legitimacy of the Palestinian cause. The document highlighted the urgency of implementing Security Council Resolution 2735 and launching the Arab-Islamic initiative for Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction.

OIC members also denounced the Zionist use of starvation as a weapon of war, through its blockade of humanitarian aid and obstruction of relief efforts, branding it as a form of genocide designed to induce forced displacement.

Condemnation of Zionist Escalation and Regional Destabilization

The Declaration condemned the Zionist entity’s recent strikes against Iran, Syria, and Lebanon, labeling them blatant violations of sovereignty and international law. It expressed grave concern over the dangerous escalation posed by these attacks and warned of their humanitarian, economic, and environmental consequences for the broader region.

In this context, the Ministers called for an immediate cessation of Zionist aggression against Iran and commended the Syrian interim government’s efforts to reintegrate Syria into its regional and international environment. The need for sustainable political and financial support to secure regional stability was also emphasized.

The Istanbul Declaration reaffirmed the OIC’s principled stance in favor of respecting the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all member states, while rejecting any form of foreign interference. The document highlighted the unique experience and historical legacy of certain member states in the post-colonial struggle, noting that such credentials position the OIC as a vital mediator in regional and international conflicts.
