Algiers, Algeria |  In a searing critique of France’s current Algeria policy, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, founder of La France Insoumise (LFI), has delivered an unflinching rebuke of President Emmanuel Macron’s increasingly aggressive posture towards Algiers. Writing on his personal blog, the veteran left-wing leader dismantled what he calls “the strategy of shock” adopted by the French government, warning that it is historically misguided, politically reckless, and destined to fail.

“The aggressiveness of the French rulers towards Algeria afflicts, alarms, and disheartens,” Mélenchon declared, adding that this confrontational approach “renews the pitiful mirages of the past” and ignores the realities of a post-colonial world. With cutting clarity, he reminded Paris that “the age of colonies and European supremacy is over — well and truly over — and good riddance.”

Mélenchon accused Macron of coupling domestic political provocation with foreign policy antagonism, noting that “after having pushed France out of almost all of Africa, Macron has chosen to accompany his Interior Minister’s provocations against Algeria.” Such tactics, he warned, are not only short-sighted but corrosive to France’s long-term interests: “By driving the French towards divorce with the Maghreb, Macronism is committing a fault from which our country will not recover as easily as its obtuse governing elites and the various lobbies — each working for their own petty agenda — seem to believe.”

In a decisive repudiation of the Élysée’s strategy, Mélenchon stressed that there is “no sustainable future for France without, or against, the Maghreb and its peoples.” He underscored the enduring bonds — familial, cultural, economic, and spiritual — that bind France and the Maghreb, bonds that no policy of exclusion or hostility can erase. “Whether it pleases the narrow-minded and shrivelled-up of all political stripes or not, our peoples are intertwined,” he said.

Mélenchon singled out the hardline policy of Bruno Retailleau, which Macron has effectively embraced, as “an unbearable form of violence” leading only to “further setbacks and wounds.” He placed this current antagonism within the long continuum of French political failure in Algeria, calling it “the fatal mirage of power” that has haunted French leadership since the 1830 invasion. The historic record, he pointed out, is unambiguous: “The objectives set during the occupation — notably the dream of regaining lost glory — led to failure. Algerian resistance began the moment of the invasion and, in one form or another, never relented until independence in 1962.”

Mélenchon’s intervention comes at a moment of heightened Franco-Algerian tension, with diplomatic spats escalating into punitive visa restrictions and reciprocal measures. In denouncing Macron’s current trajectory, the LFI leader has not only broken ranks with France’s prevailing political consensus but has also drawn a stark warning from history: that those who ignore Algeria’s steadfast resistance, past and present, will inevitably repeat the defeats of their predecessors.
