Following the Indian President’s historic visit to Algiers, Jindal Group launches North Africa’s only ductile iron pipe manufacturing facility, reinforcing Algeria–India economic cooperation and positioning Algeria as a regional export hub.
Algiers, Algeria | May 7th, 2025 — The Indian multinational Jindal Group has announced the launch of a ductile iron pipe manufacturing facility in Algeria, marking a significant step in the growing economic ties between the two countries. This initiative reflects the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and responds to Algeria’s current drive to diversify its economy and bolster local industrial capabilities.
The new factory, led regionally by Soufiane Meskouri, Jindal’s North Africa Director, will be the first of its kind in North Africa. It is designed to support Algeria’s infrastructure needs and establish the country as a regional supplier of ductile iron pipes, particularly in the sectors of water distribution, sanitation, and industrial systems.
The decision to establish operations in Algeria comes amid broader efforts from both governments to enhance strategic cooperation, following recent high-level diplomatic exchanges. Indian authorities have encouraged national companies to explore investment opportunities across the African continent, with Algeria seen as a key gateway due to its geographic location and industrial base.
The plant will contribute directly to Algeria’s industrial development by generating local employment, transferring technical know-how, and reducing dependency on imported materials. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to serve both domestic needs and export surplus production to neighboring countries, contributing to regional infrastructure initiatives.
Additionally, this project aligns with Algeria’s national economic strategy, which prioritizes attracting foreign direct investment, developing value-added industries, and encouraging South–South partnerships. Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria has been actively seeking to promote industrial self-reliance and regional integration.
Strengthening Algeria–India Ties Through Strategic Engagement
The growing industrial cooperation between Algeria and India—exemplified by Jindal’s entry—follows a broader diplomatic push to deepen bilateral ties. The recent visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Algiers marked a pivotal moment in this evolving relationship. During her meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to economic diversification, technology transfer, and joint industrial ventures. The visit also served as a catalyst for Indian enterprises to scale up their presence in Algeria, particularly in sectors such as steel production, energy, infrastructure, education, and information technology.
This state-level engagement underscored Algeria’s importance within India’s Africa outreach policy and its South–South cooperation agenda. Algerian authorities, in turn, have embraced India’s growing role as a trusted partner for sustainable industrial development. The Jindal project emerges as one of the first tangible outcomes of this renewed cooperation, illustrating how diplomatic will can translate into mutually beneficial ventures with long-term impact.
It is worth mentioning that Jindal Group, known globally for its operations in steel, mining, and infrastructure, is expanding its international presence with a focus on sustainable and integrated production models. The Algeria project marks a continuation of this strategy, with an emphasis on long-term collaboration and mutual benefit.
