Kais Saied: African Unity Is No Longer a Mirage but an Existential Necessity

Algiers – September 2025 – In a forceful address at the opening of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) in Algiers, Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed delivered a resounding call for African unity, declaring that the long-cherished dream of integration was “no longer a chimera” but a pressing imperative for the continent’s survival and emancipation.

In front of an audience of African leaders, heads of delegations, and international stakeholders, Saïed laid bare the paradox that continues to define Africa: a continent endowed with immeasurable natural wealth, yet shackled by poverty, hunger, and systematic exploitation. He attributed this enduring plight to an unjust global order and to artificial divisions engineered by foreign powers intent on perpetuating their domination.

“Our continent is overflowing with riches,” Saïed proclaimed, “yet its rightful heirs still suffer deprivation and dispossession. It is time to learn from the tragedies of the past and chart a new course toward the future our peoples deserve.”

At the core of his message was a resolute conviction that unity is not an abstract political slogan, but an existential necessity. “Africa belongs to Africans alone,” he insisted. “It is high time we restored the continent to its legitimate owners. Without unity, our resources will continue to be plundered, and our sovereignty compromised.”

Breaking sharply with what he described as the obsolete world order, Saïed urged African states to construct a new model of cooperation rooted in justice, human solidarity, and genuine independence. He asserted that such a paradigm shift was indispensable not only for safeguarding Africa’s resources but also for ensuring peace and sovereignty in a world destabilized by endless wars and divisions.

“The world needs a new order,” he warned, “one that brings an end to conflict and allows nations to defend their dignity and control their natural wealth.”

For Saïed, this unity cannot remain aspirational but must be translated into tangible projects across key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, transport, and the economy. He described these domains as the very bedrock upon which authentic independence must be built, stressing that without them Africa’s liberation would remain incomplete.

Concluding his address, the Tunisian president reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, underscoring that the struggle for freedom, dignity, and justice in Palestine is intrinsically linked to Africa’s own battle for sovereignty. “Palestine is not merely the cause of one people,” he declared, “it is a shared struggle for all of Africa and for every free nation in the world.”
