ALGIERS- In an interview on the sidelines of the second edition of the International Cosmetics Exhibition, “Cosmetica Algeria,” held from February 21 to 24, 2024, at the Ahaggar Pavilion in the Palace of Expositions in Algiers, Kamel Moula, the President of the Economic Renewal Council, heralded a significant milestone in the Algerian cosmetics industry. Moula noted the remarkable transformation witnessed within the sector, highlighted by the presence of approximately 130 specialized companies in cosmetic materials at an exhibition. This surge in brands and products reflects a notable shift from the past, signaling Algeria’s emergence as a formidable player in the cosmetics market.

“Today marks a significant milestone as we explore the avenues of the cosmetic industry in Algeria. Walking through the corridors of the exhibition, boasting around 130 specialized companies in cosmetic materials, one can’t help but marvel at the transformation. Just a few years back, such a proliferation of brands and products was unheard of in our market. However, it’s evident that Algerian products are now showcasing a commendable level of quality, competing neck to neck with international brands,” Mr. Moula said.

Acknowledging this progress, Moula emphasized the imperative of addressing looming challenges. Central to this effort is the necessity for enhanced collaboration and integration among local industry stakeholders. By fostering synergy and cooperation, the Algerian cosmetics sector can optimize productivity, facilitate knowledge exchange, and drive innovation, thereby fortifying its competitive edge.

“While we celebrate this progress, it’s essential to address the challenges that lie ahead. One of the pressing issues is the need for greater collaboration and integration within our local industry. We must bridge the gap between different stakeholders and foster a collaborative environment for growth. Enhancing integration not only boosts productivity but also encourages knowledge exchange and innovation,” he added.

Moula underscored the pivotal role of promoting local production in empowering the Algerian cosmetics industry. Encouraging domestic manufacturing not only reduces reliance on imports but also stimulates economic growth. Moreover, the burgeoning trend of Algerian cosmetics producers venturing into global markets signifies a promising trajectory for industry expansion and international recognition.

He pointed out: “A key aspect of empowering the local cosmetics industry is promoting local production. By encouraging domestic manufacturing, we not only reduce dependency on imports but also stimulate economic growth. It’s heartening to see that some producers have already started exporting their products, indicating a promising future for Algerian cosmetics in the global market.”

However, Moula stressed that success not solely on production but also on upholding rigorous quality standards. To ensure Algerian products meet global benchmarks, stringent regulations and standards must be enforced. Compliance with international quality protocols, coupled with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation, is paramount.

CREA’s Head said: “However, it’s not merely about local production; it’s about maintaining high standards. Quality assurance should be at the forefront of our agenda. We need stringent regulations and standards in place to ensure that Algerian products meet global benchmarks. This involves not only adhering to international quality standards but also continuous improvement and innovation.”

Investing in education and training emerged as another critical priority outlined by Moula. Equipping the workforce with requisite skills and expertise is essential for driving sustained growth across all facets of the industry, from product development to marketing. Additionally, fostering entrepreneurship and supporting small-scale producers can foster market diversification and spur further innovation.

“Another crucial aspect is investing in education and training. We need to equip our workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this industry. From product development to marketing, a well-trained workforce is essential for sustained growth. Additionally, promoting entrepreneurship and providing support to small-scale producers can further diversify the market and encourage innovation,” stressed the speaker.

In conclusion, while the Algerian cosmetics industry has made significant strides, Moula emphasized the need for concerted efforts to realize its full potential. By fostering collaboration, promoting local production, ensuring quality assurance, and investing in education and training, Algeria can propel its cosmetics sector to new heights of success. With a collective vision and collaborative spirit, Algerian cosmetics can shine brightly not only in domestic markets but also on the global stage, embodying a beacon of pride and excellence for the nation.
